In what seems to be a strong day for pitching in the AL, Boston RHP Josh Beckett gave his team every attempt to earn a win over the Tampa Bay Rays, but the offensive support failed to take form and his efforts went to waste as the Sox fell 0-3. Beckett pitched seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, walking just one and racking up an impressive 13 strike outs.

Josh Beckett is set for his second start of the season today as Boston battles hated rival New York, according to MLB.com. He gave up five earned runs in his first game back (at Toronto), but could fare better today at home, as he was 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA at Fenway in 2007.

Josh Beckett returned to the mound on Sunday against Toronto, but ended the day with a loss as he surrendered five runs on three hits (one home run) over 4.2 innings of work, with four walks and six strikeouts, as Boston ultimately fell 7-4. He lost, but it was great to see him back in action, and his six strikeouts were very positive. He should continue to get stronger with each start, and his fantasy stock is back on the rise.

As expected, Josh Beckett will return to the starting rotation today against Toronto, according to ESPN.com. He has been activated off the DL and will battle Roy Halladay. We will post news on his performance following the game.

Boston ace Josh Beckett is expected to return from his stint on the DL and make his first start of the season, according to the Providence Journal. Manager Terry Francona told reporters Beckett should be in but will be closely monitored, thus we expect the low pitch count to be in full effect. "We expect he'll give everything he has, but we know he's not going to pitch a complete game," said Francona. Beckett has been struggling with lower back pain and reports of an undisclosed hip injury have also persisted. Also, keep in mind the Red Sox need to make room for Beckett on the roster, so someone will go (rumors indicate RHP David Aardsma is the likely candidate).

Josh Beckett had another solid day in his bid to return to the starting rotation on Tuesday, according to Boston.com. Beckett showed no signs of the back ailment that held him from starting the season opener in Japan, as he allowed just two hits in five innings while striking out six. The only run off Beckett came on a solo homer from Yahmed Yema, a Single-A outfielder. Beckett threw 64 pitches on the day, 47 went for strikes. Beckett seems close to returning and can be activated from the DL on Thursday.

Josh Beckett says he feels healthy and getting back to the Red Sox rotation is just a matter of stretching himself out, according to MLB.com. "I think that's basically it, [getting stretched out]," Beckett said. "I don't know what they're planning on doing, but [I'm] just trying to get stretched out right now." Beckett is on the DL while recovering from a back injury, but he's hoping to make his season debut on April 6.

Josh Beckett threw 47 pitches in a minor league game on Thursday, according to MLB.com. He hurled four scoreless innings for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs versus Minnesota's New Britain Rock Cats. Beckett threw 47 pitches, while allowing one hit and no walks, with six strikeouts. Boston Minor League pitching coordinator Ralph Treuel stated that Josh did well throwing the ball today. This is good news for Boston's ace, but it remains to be seen if he will be placed on the DL to open the season.

MLB.com reports that the The Red Sox coaching staff will make a roster move just hours before the season opener placing Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list. With a retroactive listing backdated to March 19, Beckett would be eligible to return on April 4. The report notes that while Beckett is progressing well in his rehab.

Josh Beckett reportedly threw a pair of very good innings against Double-A hitters on Sunday morning, according to Boston.com. Red Sox farm director Mike Hazen stated that Beckett was throwing at around 93 mph and had solid movement on his pitches which had hitters confused. Beckett threw 32 pitches and appears ready to move on to the next level, which could be four innings five days from today. This is positive news for the "ace" of the Red Sox rotation.

Outside of that, the Sox have no definitive plans for Beckett moving forward, but hopes remain high that he’ll be making regular-season starts sooner rather than later.

Josh Beckett played long toss and then threw a 45-pitch bullpen session Friday, saying afterwards that it went great, according to the Providence Journal. Beckett, who's dealing with a sore back, is slated to pitch in an intrasquad game on Sunday. "There are still some peaks and valleys," he said. "That first week I felt better every other day, and then every other day I felt worse. Now I'm at a point where I can do every thing I need to do in between starts or bullpens. I've progressed, but it's only been in the last week where I can start to put a time table when I can get on the mound." The Sox haven't set a timetable for Beckett's return, but it sounds as if will be able to avoid a DL stint.

Josh Beckett threw an unexpected bullpen session, according to MLB.com. He was not expected to throw until Thursday, but threw 45 pitches on Wednesday. After the session pitching coach John Farrell stated, "In Beckett's bullpen this morning, he proved that there were no restrictions when he got on the mound. He went through his 45-pitch bullpen today, and surprisingly the arm strength hasn't suffered that much of a setback. Granted, it was just a bullpen. But I think the first step toward his game progression will likely go through another bullpen." Farrell added that he could get into a minor league game on Sunday.

According to the Providence Journal, Terry Francona said that Josh Beckett had a “very good day” yesterday morning during his 120-foot, long-toss session at City of Palms Park. Beckett, sidelined since March 8 with back spasms, is receiving positive reports from the coaches and training staff. He will not travel to Japan with the team. Francona said the plan with Beckett now is to remain in Florida. He will eventually pitch in a minor-league game.

Josh Beckett threw 25 times from 60 feet and 10 times at 75 feet yesterday on flat ground on Sunday, as he resumed a throwing program, according to the Boston Globe. "Everything's good," said Beckett. "I did everything I wanted to do." If all goes well, he could throw a side session on Thursday, but manager Terry Francona confirmed Sunday that Beckett will not travel with the team to take part in the season-opening games in Japan.

The latest news out of Florida, according to the Boston Globe, is that Beckett received treatment Thursday morning on his ailing back, and is feeling better. Skipper Terry Francona said they're now trying to determine when they might get Beckett out on the field to play catch. Count on the Beckett watch to heat up as the team prepares for a long plane flight to Japan.

The Providence Journal reports that the biggest concern for Boston right now is Josh Beckett, who has been hampered by back spasms. No two reports out of Boston have been the same, and while most note his status for the team's trip to Japan is undecided, he's not expected to travel on the 14 hour flight. Beckett has been drafted as a fantasy ace in all formats this month, and while his back injury isn't considered serious, it's concerning nevertheless.

The right-hander was moving effortlessly around the clubhouse and skipper Terry Francona was thrilled. It is still not clear when he will make his next start, and there are questions about his availability for the trip to Japan next week.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona told ESPN.com on Tuesday that there's just about no way a this point that Josh Beckett's sore back can possibly heal in time for him to pitch in the season opener in Japan. "I don't think we know [for sure] yet," Francona said. "But we're certainly not going to rush him back to pitch a game March 24 if he's not ready. And I think if you look at it with common sense, he's not going to pitch over there." At this point, the injury doesn't appear to be anything that should bother him long-term, but it sounds like he won't be ready to go in two weeks. It's something to keep an eye on, but if he returns to workouts soon, he should be ready when the full season gets going next month.

Manager Francona commented that Beckett is doing better and is more comfortable but the team still plans to take it slow and there is no new date set for his possible return. Josh Beckett is more pessimistic about his ailing back, according to the Boston Globe. He had trouble sleeping last night, and didn't feel much better after undergoing treatment this morning, even though an MRI revealed no issues with the disks in his lower back. He said,"Today wasn't as good as yesterday. We'll just have to wait and see I guess. Doctors told me yesterday that there was a possibility I'd come in and feel like I do today so as far as that goes, the doctors were right." When asked if he would be ready to go for the 24th he added,"I don't know. If I'd had as much progress from yesterday to today as I did from the first day to the second day, I wouldn't have ruled that out. Today I'm just holding up my obligation (to talk to media). It probably would have been better to talk to you guys yesterday because I was a little more optimistic. I'm in a pretty crappy mood as far as this thing goes because it was a pretty frustrating day because yesterday was good and today's kind of horse(bleep)." He then said this when asked when he thinks he will pitch again, "We're going to make sure it's completely pain free. I can't even really if laying in one position too long, or sitting in one position too long or standing in one position too long it kind of goes backwards. I've got to keep moving and stuff like that." Beckett will continue to drop down fantasy draft boards following this news.

However, Francona failed to commit as to whether Beckett would be ready for their season-opening trip to Japan. After leaving the mound before starting Saturday's game due to back spasms, Josh Beckett received several hours of treatment, but the Red Sox haven't announced the severity of the injury, according to the Boston Herald. Through a Red Sox spokesperson, Beckett said, "We’ll just wait and see how it feels tomorrow." He'll be re-evaluated Sunday morning and may undergo an MRI. Josh Beckett breezed through two innings on Thursday allowing no runs, as the Red Sox went on to a 24-0 victory over Boston College. Beckett wasn't happy with his work on the hill so he went to the bullpen after his outing to work on his curveball, which he seemed to find. All systems are go with Beckett, and all the Sox are really looking for from him at this point is to avoid injury.
