The Reds worked out a deal with the Cubs for former No. 1 overall pick Josh Hamilton after the Cubs selected him from the Devil Rays in the Rule 5 draft, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Hamilton didn't play from July 2002 until June of this year because of injuries and personal issues. He will have to remain on the Reds' roster for the entire season or be offered back to Tampa for $25,000. "I'm excited," Hamilton said. "I wasn't expecting this after all I've been through the last two years. I don't think (Tampa Bay) thought anyone would take the chance on me."

Josh Hamilton is slated to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today, according to the St. Petersburg Times. His season is over after just 15 minor league games, his first action since 2002 due to injury and drug problems. The Devil Rays haven't decided whether he'll take part in winter ball.

Josh Hamilton played in his first professional game since 2002 for Single-A Hudson Valley, according to the Devil Rays website. He went 1-for-3.

Josh Hamilton was granted permission by major league baseball to play in the minor leagues for the rest of the year, according to the AP. Hamilton, the Devil Rays No. 1 pick in 1999, hasn't played since July 2002 because of injuries and personal problems.
