Manager Ned Yost was so worried that Ben Sheets wouldn't make it out of his start without an injury that he had Rick Helling warm up next to Sheets prior to the game. Nonetheless, Sheets was healthy, and while he didn't pitch well, he pitched well enough, giving up five runs over seven-plus innings and striking out eight. Three of the five runs he surrendered were in the eighth inning, where he couldn't record an out.
