May 5, 2008

May 5, 2008
The AP reports that less than one year after he had Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his left elbow, B.J. Ryan has been cleared to pitch in consecutive games for the Toronto Blue Jays. Ryan had season-ending surgery last May 10 and started this season on the disabled list.
April 28, 2008
The Blue Jays have handled closer B.J. Ryan with kid gloves this month. Ryan entered Sunday's game against the Royals at the "K" throwing a perfect eighth inning. Most believed Ryan would return in the ninth and get the save in the Jays 5-2 win, but left-hander Jesse Carlson worked the final frame, earning his first save.
April 16, 2008
B.J. Ryan is back with the Blue Jays but manager John Gibbons is still trying to find out the best way to utilize his hard throwing lefty less than a year removed from Tommy John surgery, this according to MLB.com. "You've got to be careful, and you've got to be smart with the guy," Gibbons said. "You can't get too overly excited now that you know he's back, because it's still been less than a year."
April 13, 2008
B.J. Ryan came off the DL and quickly picked up a save. He worked the 10th inning in Sunday's win over the Rangers. Ryan allowed one hit and kept the Rangers off the board. It was his first save since April 11, 2007.
April 13, 2008
The Toronto Blue Jays have activated closer B.J. Ryan from the disabled list, according to MLB.com. The lefty reliever has not pitched since April 14, 2007, having undergone Tommy John elbow ligament reconstruction surgery on May 10th of last year and now appears to be ready to make a return to action.
April 12, 2008
Manager John Gibbons stated that B.J. Ryan will pitch at least two more times in the Minors, which sets up his potential return to the Jays during the April 18-21 homestand against the Tigers, according to MLB.com. Gibbons added, "That's a very good possibility."
April 10, 2008
Toronto's replacement closer Jeremy Accardo took the loss for the second straight day Wednesday, this after blowing a ninth inning one run lead against the supposedly light hitting A's (they have 10 or more hits in the last five games). Wednesday's blown save was his first after three successful conversions, but he looked abnormally shaky for the second straight day. Big B.J. Ryan could be ready to return during Toronto's next homestand, which begins on Wednesday. Ryan will step right into the closer role upon his return.
April 7, 2008
B.J. Ryan will make his second rehab appearance on Monday, just two days after a successful inning for Single-A Dunedin. The closer is coming back from left forearm and biceps soreness, and he could return by April 11 or 12, the Toronto Star reports. Ryan will likely share the closer's role with Jeremy Accardo when he comes back.
April 3, 2008
B.J. Ryan is expected to share the closer's role with Jeremy Accardo upon his return from the DL, according to the Toronto Star. Ryan should return in eight or nine days, and the plan is to have Accordo help out in the early going.
April 2, 2008
Toronto reliever B.J. Ryan hit the mound in minor-league action today, continuing his progress back to the majors, according to MLB.com. Ryan underwent reconstructive surgery on his left elbow this offseason and is now attempting to complete his rehab and get back to action for the Blue Jays. Today he pitched a simulated game, throwing 21 pitches to several of Toronto's minor-league prospects. The team has scheduled Ryan to appear in a minor-league game on Saturday. If that goes well, he could join the major-league roster early next week.
March 31, 2008
B.J. Ryan has been placed on the 15-day DL, according to MLB.com. He is making good progress on his Tommy John surgery recovery and could return in mid April.
March 27, 2008
The Toronto Blue Jays finalized their roster on Wednesday, and B.J. Ryan will not be part of the opening day festivities, this according to the Toronto Star. However, Jays' general manager J.P. Ricciardi told the paper that Ryan is scheduled to begin throwing off the mound next week, and should return in mid-April barring a setback. At this point hurrying the left-hander along won't help the longterm process. In the meantime, Jeremy Accardo will get the save opps in place of Ryan.
March 25, 2008
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons confirmed Monday that B.J. Ryan will not be ready for the start of the regular season, according to the Toronto Sun. "We don't know when he'll be ready but we're hoping for mid April," Gibbons said. "We want to make sure we do it right. He's fine, but he has run out of time. It's going to take a little longer but so what." Well, fantasy owners were hoping he'd be ready to close games now, that's what. Those wishes were hardly realistic, though, and if he's ready to pitch for the Jays a few weeks from now, that would mark an impressively quick return from his Tommy John surgery.
March 22, 2008
B.J. Ryan, who threw 30 pitches during a bullpen session at Knology Park in Dunedin, Fla., on Friday --told MLB.com that the pain he complained about after minor soreness in his left forearm and biceps halted his spring work - will return to action on Monday. Don't expect Ryan to have any closing opportunities until both sides feel comfortable putting him to a competitive situation. However long Ryan is out, it appears the soreness in his arm was not serious.
March 21, 2008
B.J. Ryan threw 30 pitches during a bullpen session Friday and hopes to pitch in next Monday's game. Ryan said the discomfort that he experienced during an outing earlier this week was not related to his left elbow. "He said yesterday that he felt like pitching in a game," pitching coach Brad Arnsberg said on MLB.com. "That was a wonderful thing to hear. We're still going to kind of guard him -- mostly against himself. He's such a gamer that I know he wants to get out there." Despite Ryan's optimism, it's still likely that he'll begin the year on the DL, with Jeremy Accardo assuming the closer role.
March 21, 2008
B.J. Ryan is likely to begin the year on the DL after feeling soreness in his pitching arm after hit outing Monday, according to SLAM! Sports. The Jays say they're not overly concerned about their closer, as the lefty was able to go through his normal throwing program Tuesday with no problems, but it appears as though they'll take the cautious approach. Jeremy Accardo will pitch the ninth inning until Ryan is ready.
March 20, 2008
The Jays aren't worried about B.J. Ryan's progress, according to MLB.com. The team isn't getting bothered by the fact that Ryan felt some soreness in his left arm after his last outing. Any concerns the club might have had were eased a bit on Tuesday, when he went through his normal throwing program with no problems. With that said, neither Jays manager John Gibbons or bullpen coach Bruce Walton, knew whether or not Ryan would pitch as scheduled in Thursday's game against the Yankees. It's possible that Ryan could take an extra day off and make his next game appearance on Friday. Gibbons commented on when Ryan could pitch again, "I couldn't tell you that right now." Ryan is trying to rebound from ligament replacement surgery.
March 19, 2008
B.J. Ryan experienced some elbow soreness after working in a game on Monday, the Toronto Star reports. We figure a bit of pain is to be anticipated, as Ryan is less than a year removed from Tommy John surgery.
March 14, 2008
For the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery 10 months ago, Toronto reliever B.J. Ryan pitched in a game, earning two strikeouts on three batters in the Blue Jays’ 4-8 loss to Tampa Bay today, according to the Associated Press. This was Ryan’s first appearance since last April. “It was good,” Ryan told reporters. “I kind of went out there anxious and nervous, not really knowing what to expect because it’s the first time being back out there, and I didn’t want to feel my way around the way like I did in those simulated games. We didn’t hold anything back. We moved it around both sides of the plate, threw a couple of good breaking balls and a couple of crummy ones. But I figured that’s what was going to happen.” Now the Jays wait to see how Ryan’s arm feels tomorrow. If there is no pain, that is a great sign and the closer could be on track to once again working as a force in those final innings.
March 13, 2008
The Blue Jays team website reports that ninth inning option, B.J. Ryan, is scheduled to appear in his first Grapefruit League game of the spring on Friday. Barring a change of plans, the one-inning appearance will mark Ryan's first big league outing since April 14 last season. Ryan has done everything the team has asked, and his promising spring offers the left-hander a good chance to begin the season on the active roster. Whether he starts out in middle relief, or as the team's primary closing option, is still uncertain.
March 11, 2008
B.J. Ryan took another step forward in his mission to be ready for opening day, according to MLB.com. He looked good on Tuesday as he rehabs from elbow surgery by downing four hitters on 16 pitches, including nine strikes. He is expected to pitch in his first Grapefruit League game this Friday.
March 8, 2008
As expected, B.J. Ryan faced four batters in a simulated game on Saturday, according to the National Post. He felt fine, and his fastball reached 88 mph on the radar gun. "I’m not even really thinking about my elbow now," he said. "I’m just worried about the end results. I threw some fastballs that had some good life. They finished down in the zone." Ryan, working his way back from Tommy John surgery, will toss another simulated game Tuesday with the hope of making his spring exhibition debut later in the week.
March 6, 2008
A day after it was announced that he would make his first appearance of the spring on Saturday, B.J. Ryan and the Blue Jays have decided to take it slow with the return of their injured closer, this according to MLB.com. Instead, Ryan will throw a couple of simulated games first which will consist of single inning simulations on Saturday and Tuesday, and if they go well he will likely make his first appearance on March 15th. As we suggested yesterday, don't be too quick to overlook Jeremy Accardo in the Jays bullpen because the team will likely be very cautious, especially early on, with Ryan.
March 6, 2008
B.J. Ryan will look to make his spring training debut on Saturday after a solid outing on Wednesday in a simulated game, this according to MLB.com. "I still try not to do too much, too fast, but on the other hand, I need to get ready to get out there and pitch in some games." Ryan is hoping to be the team's closer from day one this year, though that would be less than one year after he had TJ surgery. Ryan appears to be on his way to closing in April, but we would still caution against putting too much faith in him early until we seem him have solid outings on the mound in game-action. As such, Jeremy Accardo is a must grab for those of you who plan on rostering Ryan.

March 3, 2008
B.J. Ryan threw against minor league hitters in a batting practice session on Sunday. He tells MLB.com that he was able to concentrate on his mechanics, rather than the state of his surgically repaired left elbow. "That was the big thing for me today," Ryan explains. "You stop worrying about your arm, because you know it's OK, and now you start nitpicking things that you need to work on, which is where I want to be at right now." He threw 25 pitches in the session.
March 1, 2008
Skipper John Gibbons told the Blue Jays team website that the days of using closer B.J. Ryan for more than one inning are done. Ryan, who led the Majors with 13 multi-inning saves in 2006, will not see any eighth inning work this season as long as he is the primary ninth inning option. "He's one of the best closers in baseball," Gibbons said, "but you won't see him coming in the eighth inning again. You won't see any of that. We want to try to definitely stay away from that. Plus, we've got guys we've got confidence in to get that final out of the eighth." Ryan is scheduled to throw 25-30 pitches in a batting-practice on Sunday morning and receive his first Grapefruit League action in mid-March.
March 1, 2008
B.J. Ryan will have his surgically repaired elbow examined on Sunday, according to the Toronto Star. We should have a better idea after the exam about whether he really will be over his Tommy John surgery in time for the regular-season opener.
February 28, 2008
B.J. Ryan faced hitters for the first time this spring Thursday morning, according to the Globe and Mail, and all signs were promising. The report notes that Ryan hit all of his spots while throwing sliders to both slides of the plate and keeping the ball down consistently. All engines are go for Ryan to open the season as the teams closer. The left-hander might not throw on back-to-back days early on, but barring a setback the Jays closer is ahead of schedule.
February 25, 2008
The Globe and Mail called closer B.J. Ryan's bullpen session on Monday “a step forward” after he threw before the Toronto Blue Jays first intrasquad game. “The last bullpen I threw, I thought it was crummy,” said Ryan, who is scheduled to meet this week with the specialist who performed his Tommy John surgery, Dr. Timothy Kremcheck. “Today, I got better as I went along. I found my arm slot. Now, it’s a matter of remembering it. But when I came off the mound I felt pretty good. I was able to throw my cutter to both sides of the plate.” All indications point to Ryan being the Jays' opening day closer. The proof in the pudding will come later in March when teams are closer to simulating game situations.
February 19, 2008
B.J. Ryan continues to make a case that he will be the team's closer on Opening Day, a month short of a year since his surgery. According to the team website, Tommy John surgery and the recovery continue to become a shorter process since Dr. Frank Jobe performed the first such procedure on pitcher Tommy John in 1974. The rehabilitation process is down to a science now. The surgery itself takes only about an hour. "It's a much, much more advanced surgery now," pitching coach Brad Arnsberg said. "So obviously the rehabilitation is a little bit shorter. That's exciting to know. I didn't know that. I figured it was probably somewhat the same surgery I had, but it's not." Ryan is aiming to be the best and earliest example of how far science has come concerning TJS. While returning from the elbow surgery in 10 or 11 months isn't an impossible feat, more often than not, at least a year is required for a successful comeback. Ryan's surgery took place on May 10 and his goal is to return in less than 12 months in time for Opening Day. Don't bet against the 6-foot-6 left-hander.
February 16, 2008
B.J. Ryan, the 6-foot-6 left-hander, put his return from elbow surgery on display for the first time Friday, according to MLB.com. He followed that up with another session on Saturday. "I couldn't wait to get out there that first day," Ryan said. "You can't get the ball back fast enough once you get out there and get going. And you finally settle down and get in a little rhythm. I felt good." Ryan threw for only 10 minutes, but didn't show any ill effects from his TJS last May. The report noted he threw fastballs and sliders in his second round in the bullpen since arriving in Florida. The team still gives Ryan a chance to be ready for Opening Day - only 11 months removed from surgery that typically takes anywhere from 12-24 months to completely recover from.
February 13, 2008
B.J. Ryan, recovering from Tommy John surgery, has thrown two bullpen sessions with no physical problems and is slated to throw next from the mound Saturday. He is still three months away from reaching one year post-surgery, but Ryan is hoping to be ready by opening day. "I felt good coming into spring training with the same throwing routine," Ryan said in the Toronto Star. "I got hurt doing my job. I like to take the ball. I don't turn it down very often. But that's going to catch up with you some time. Guys pitch with aches and pains throughout their careers, but sometimes it's a little too much and you feel like you're taking away from your teammates. You try and grow and mature as a person and then just work hard to get back to where you were."
February 3, 2008
Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi still expects B.J. Ryan to be over his Tommy John surgery in time for opening day, according to the Boston Globe. "It's been nine months now since the surgery. He threw his second bullpen recently. Until I'm told different, he'll be with us in spring training and ready to start the season. If we have to hold him back a month based on what we see, we'll do that." Realistically, Ryan will be held back early in the season, since this is such a major procedure, but so far, so good.
January 25, 2008
B.J. Ryan, recovering from Tommy John surgery, is set to throw off a mound for the first time on Monday, according to the Toronto Sun. "I talked to B.J. a few days ago and I'll be catching him Monday," pitching coach Brad Arnsberg said in his enthusiastic manner yesterday from his home in Arlington, Tex. "B.J. had been throwing long toss from 120 feet, shut down for a month and now is feeling so good that he's ready to start his normal throwing program with a light bullpen. He'll be throwing off the mound. He's really excited and told me he hasn't had a bad day since he started throwing." The Jays are still cautiously optimistic about Ryan being ready when the season opens, but we're betting he'll be forced to miss at least the beginning of the season.
