The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles are confident that B.J. Ryan can step in as their closer if they decide to trade Jorge Julio.

B.J. Ryan picked up a save for the Orioles in the season opener. Ryan came into the game with the bases loaded, one out, and a five-run lead, and he was tasked with getting lefty Johnny Damon and switch-hitter Bill Mueller out. He did that and pitched a scoreless ninth. This is no reflection on Jorge Julio nor does it even suggest that Ryan would be first in line if Julio faltered. It was merely a situational save.

The Orioles signed B.J. Ryan to a one-year contract today and avoided arbitration with the left-handed reliever, according to the Sports Network. He was 4-1 with a 3.40 ERA last season.
