He sustained a torn left hamstring, but said, "My ego is not big enough to say I'm going to come in and try to be the hero in September. That's not the idea. It's to get healthy enough to play and help this team in whatever capacity I can."

Eric Byrnes may need to undergo surgery on his torn left hamstring, which would ultimately end his 2008 campaign, according to MLB.com. Byrnes will receive a second opinion on his hamstring and skipper Bob Melvin commented that the team will probably know within the week if surgery is Byrnes' best option. Melvin added, "Whether or not he has to have surgery will probably be the telltale. Right now, we're still trying to figure out how severe it is in there and how far the tendon is off the bone. We will decide if surgery is the way to go or if it's not the way to go."

Eric Byrnes will head back to the Bay Area on Thursday to work with Nick Athens, a chiropractor/therapist, the Arizona Republic reports. The outfielder is seeking help with his sore hamstrings. Athens aided Byrnes with similar issues when the outfielder was with the A's. The Republic notes that Byrnes recently needed five or six hours in the training room to get ready for games.
