In his first start in some time, San Francisco LHP Barry Zito suffered another loss but showed signs of improvement. Zito pitched five innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with two walks versus five strike outs.
May 6, 2008
Barry Zito will start against the Pirates on Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
May 3, 2008
Giants manager Bruce Bochy has informed reporters LHP Barry Zito will be working and available out of the bullpen today, according to MLB.com.
May 2, 2008
According to the Giants' official website, Barry Zito, although he'll likely make multiple-inning appearances out of the bullpen, can benefit from the culture shock. Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti pointed out that mild-mannered Russ Ortiz, an 18-game winner in 1999, was demoted to the bullpen to begin the season's second half in 2000 after posting a 4-8 mark and a 6.92 ERA. Ortiz regained his starting spot when Joe Nathan injured his shoulder and won seven consecutive games on his way to a 14-12 finish.
April 28, 2008
According to ESPN.com, Barry Zito has been moved into the bullpen. The left-hander signed a seven-year deal with the team before last season, and is 0-6 a 7.53 ERA in his first six starts.
April 28, 2008
Barry Zito could get demoted to the Giants' bullpen due to poor play as a starter, according to the Mercury News. Zito is 0-6 over six starts, with a 7.53 ERA and 1.95 WHIP. He could either get skipped in the rotation or move to the bullpen, and Manager Bruce Bochy stated, "We've got to do something. We can't keep doing what we're doing and getting what we're getting."
April 27, 2008
Barry Zito , who is winless in his first six starts for the first time in his career, gave up eight runs and walked three on Sunday lasting three innings in the 10-1 loss to the Reds.
April 24, 2008
Barry Zito won't miss a start, according to the SF Chronicle. He is gravely struggling, as he is 0-5 with a 5.61 ERA and 1.79 WHIP, but pitching coach Dave Righetti said the team is not considering temporarily pulling him from the rotation and stated, "No, because who the hell is going to pitch? We're not that deep in starting pitching. Noah Lowry is hurting now and we're not that deep in Triple-A. We need Zito to pitch." The team is going to just let him ride out his slump, and hope he can get on track. Righetti also added that he has lost velocity on his pitches, and is in a "transition period in his career."
April 23, 2008
San Francisco LHP Barry Zito continues to disappoint, picking up his FIFTH loss of the season as the Giants suffer the 4-5 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Zito lasted just 3 2/3 innings, throwing 79 pitches (44 strikes) to allow five runs (all earned) on six hits.
April 16, 2008
Barry Zito will be looking for his first win of the season tonight as he battles the Diamondbacks, according to MLB.com. Zito is currently 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA, and is 2-3 with a 2.73 ERA lifetime against Arizona.
April 12, 2008
Barry Zito allowed four runs, though only one was earned, as he picked up his third loss in three starts on Friday. Zito again struggled to put away hitters with only two K in six innings, but he also was able to throw the ball in the strike zone as he walked just one batter, so this is a slightly encouraging outing, though certainly not an overly exciting one.
April 7, 2008
Barry Zito allowed the Brewers to score in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings in Sunday's blowout 7-0 loss. The left-hander allowed eight hits and five runs (three earned), and walked two while striking out three. Zito is one more poor start from losing his mound control. The veteran southpaw was visibly frustrated in his second loss of the season.
March 31, 2008
Barry Zito, who was the Giants major free agent signing during the 2006 offseason, allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings in the Monday loss to the Dodgers. Fantasy owners who were brave enough to place Zito in their mixed league starting lineup, will think twice next week. Zito has a second start this week at Milwaukee, a matchup that's no more favorable than today's against the Big Blue.
March 24, 2008
Barry Zito may have rebounded from a poor start on Friday by allowing only two hits in 5.2 innings pitched, but the signs point to the left-hander not having what he once did. Entering Friday's start with one of the most shocking pitching lines of the spring, this according to the New York Times: a 14.92 earned run average, 21 hits, 10 walks and not one strikeout in 12 2/3 innings, covering 67 batters, his Friday start still isn't enough to warm to him. Zito's fastball has decreased several miles an hour --to a more hittable 84 -- and he doesn't trust his stuff enough to get ahead of hitters early in the count. Draft Zito, even as a late round bargain, offers far more risk, than upside.
March 21, 2008
Barry Zito rebounded from a poor outing last time on the hill by allowing just two hits on 96 pitches in 5.2 scoreless innings against the White Sox on Friday. Zito is rounding into form with a 10.31 ERA...wait a second, that isn't good is it? Zito actually didn't have a strikeout until today, and while he professed to be unconcerned, the Giants probably wish they could void the contract that they signed Zito to last season. Too bad this isn't football.
March 15, 2008
Barry Zito has been hot and cold throughout the spring and had another poor outing against Seattle on Saturday as he allowed seven runs on seven hits (2 home runs) over 5.1 innings, with four walks and no strikeouts. Zito went 11-13 in 2007 and will drop down draft boards if he doesn't fare better in his next start.
March 5, 2008
Barry Zito worked three innings and allowed just one run in hurling for the Giants on Wednesday, though his team lost 3-1 to the Royals, according to MLB.com. Zito threw 39 pitches, allowing one homer to Ryan Shealy in the third inning. This was a significant improvement over Zito's last outing (giving up eight runs in 2/3 of an inning last Saturday), a good sign for fans and fantasy owners alike.
February 29, 2008
Since Barry Zito had tendintis in his wrist during the second half of last season, the Giants are being cautious with him this spring, according to the Contra Costa Times. To that end, he has yet to take batting practice this spring, though he recently began taking some dry cuts. "We're just being careful," manager Bruce Bochy said. Zito is slated to make his exhibition debut on Saturday.
February 15, 2008
Manager Bruce Bochy said just last week that he wasn't sure yet who would start for the Giants on opening day. But he's now apparently settled on Barry Zito over Matt Cain. "Matt is still young. He'll be an Opening Day pitcher," Bochy said in the San Francisco Chronicle. "This year, we just felt Zito should have that start. I think as much as anything this is something he earned with the way he pitched at the end of last season. Barry, he's accustomed to it. It makes sense to send him out there opening day." Cain is easily the superior fantasy option of the two hurlers, but the veteran usually gets the nod over the youngster in this kind of competition.
February 9, 2008
Barry Zito might not be the Giants' opening day starter this spring, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "I'll get with (pitching coach) Dave Righetti and we'll have that done pretty soon," manager Bruce Bochy said. "I'll answer that in Arizona." Zito is entering the second year of his monster $126 million contract after going 11-13 with a 4.53 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in his first season.
