Brian Roberts continued his strong start to the season on Monday as he had three hits and two RBI for the Orioles. April 5, 2008
Brian Roberts had only one hit on Saturday night but he was still able to steal two bases on the night despite being caught once. Whether or not Roberts stays in Baltimore he still figures to be a top-5 hitter from the second base position, especially if he keeps on running like this.
March 31, 2008
Brian Roberts had two hits, walked twice and scored a run in Baltimore's loss to Tampa Bay on opening day. The O's would love to see Roberts have a solid first half with the hope of moving the second baseman before the July trade deadline.
March 30, 2008
Brian Roberts told RotoTimes sources that he is still unsure about his status in Baltimore, but the second baseman claims that if he is with the team on opening day, which it appears he will be, he is unlikely to be moved. For now, it appears to be a minor malady, but it's something to keep an eye on over the next few days.
March 25, 2008
Brian Roberts will not be in the Tuesday lineup when the Orioles host Florida. Roberts was scratched from Tuesday's game because of a sore back, this according to the Baltimore Sun. Anytime Roberts is held out of the lineup, trade speculation will prevail. That doesn't seem to be the case today, as the team is listing his bad back as the reason for his inactive status. Utility infielder Scott Moore is replacing Roberts at second base and leading off.
March 24, 2008
Brian Roberts will not be traded to the Cubs any time soon, this according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. This deal has been rumored to be on, then off, for weeks. The bottom line is that the Cubs will go with Ryan Theriot in the leadoff spot and Mark DeRosa as their starting second basemen for now, though there is still a chance that these talks could be rekindled thereby erasing a lot of DeRosa's value.
March 20, 2008
Lou Piniella told the Arlington Daily Herald that a late trade could force the Cubs to scramble the puzzle that the team has spent the spring putting together. The Cubs skipper didn't specifically name the position or player, but his evasive verbiage leads one to believe he is referring to the talks with the O's for Brian Roberts. "We could be getting in the situation where something is done right at the tail end and it upsets the apple cart a little,'' Piniella said. "That's not the ideal situation, but it's not just up to (general manager) Jim (Hendry), it's up to the other teams he's talking to, too.'' The O's have been adamant that Roberts would not be part of the opening day roster and the Cubs and White Sox are the leading candidates to acquire the speedy second baseman.
March 18, 2008
A recent blog entry in the Chicago Tribune speculated that the White Sox might make a play at acquiring Brian Roberts from the Orioles. Roberts apparently is frustrated by the neverending speculation, while the White Sox would love to snag Roberts away from the waiting arms of the Cubs. The Sox would like to ditch Juan Uribe, but it's not clear if they have the top-end prospects necessary to pull off such a deal. It's all speculation at this point, so stay tuned.
March 14, 2008
The Cubs have upped the ante in their attempt to acquire Brian Roberts from the Orioles. On Thursday, they added prospect Jose Ceda to the mix, according to the Chicago Tribune. Infielder Ronny Cedeno and pitchers Sean Gallagher and Donnie Veal are the other players offered up by the Cubs. Despite the daily updates, it appears most likely that a deal won't be completed until opening day nears. Stay tuned.
March 12, 2008
Brian Roberts didn't make the trip to Port St. Lucie for a game against the New York Mets on Wednesday, so he participated in some drills and took batting practice with those left behind. What Roberts can't avoid, however, is the continued rumors about his exit out of Baltimore. According to Slam Sports rarely does an hour go by when the two-time all-star isn't reminded about whispers in the wind. "I don't have a choice about thinking about it because I get asked every day. My friends call me all the time, fans yell at me about it, guys from other teams ask me about it. It's pretty much nonstop," Roberts said. "You think about it when somebody's asking, but other than that, you go about your day the same way you always do. My job is to get ready for the season, whether it's here or someplace else." While there is nothing knew concerning the talks between the O's and the Cubs, it's still believed that Roberts will not be in a Baltimore uniform in May.
March 8, 2008
The trade talks between the Cubs and O's concerning a deal for second baseman Brian Roberts are on hold for now. The teams have not agreed to a package that both find suitable. According to the Baltimore Sun, the Cubs have offered infielder Ronny Cedeno, pitching prospects Sean Gallagher and Donald Veal, and one other player for Roberts, but the Orioles are holding out for a better offer. Almost everyone close to this situation believes a deal will get done, but as opening day approaches it becomes less and less likely.
March 8, 2008
The O's and Cubs have not had any recent discussions about dealing Brian Roberts, according to the Baltimore Sun. "Our scouts are out and about doing their due diligence and watching the teams that they should be watching," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. The two clubs have been talking trade for months but can't agree on which players should end up in the deal, so they continue to scout each other's teams trying to find the right mix. Obviously, both teams would prefer to have a deal done before the regular season begins, but this could drag on past opening day.
March 5, 2008
Cubs general manager Jim Hendry has dismissed rumors that his team is on the verge of acquiring Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts. "There have been no active talks in any trade situation in the last five to six days," Hendry tells the Chicago Tribune.

February 29, 2008
Brian Roberts reached base twice during Friday's exhibition game, just as he did during Thursday's contest, according to the Baltimore Sun. He also has four steals already in the two games. Do you think this guy is trying to impress the Cubs or other trade suitors? It appears to be only a matter of when, not if, he's going to be traded.
February 24, 2008
The Brian Roberts-to-the-Cubs rumors have been swirling for a while now, and, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Roberts will land with the Cubbies once the Orioles decide which pitchers they want in return. Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher, Jason Marquis, Jose Ceda and Donald Veal have been some of the pitchers that have been rumored to be involved. Roberts would receive a minor uptick in value with a move to Chicago, as he would be in a much better lineup.
February 23, 2008
Brian Roberts lifted weights and hit some softly tossed balls on Friday, according to the Baltimore Sun. "He looked real good today," manager Dave Trembley said. "There were no restrictions on him." That was his first day working out since heading to an emergency room on Wednesday. Doctors believe that he had a kidney stone that broke up before it had to pass. If that's the case, Roberts shouldn't be slowed at all this spring.
February 21, 2008
Brian Roberts was back at the O's training facility on Thursday afternoon, reports MLB.com. This, one day after making a visit to the emergency room. The report noted that Roberts woke up early Wednesday with a sharp pain in the stomach" and had to call for an ambulance. "It just kind of gradually started going away," Roberts said. "I think they think it's a kidney stone, but I didn't have the excruciating pass of it." Roberts has a checkup later today and if cleared, said he would be back with his teammates Friday.
February 21, 2008
Brian Roberts is again absent from the O's training facility on Thursday, notes the Baltimore Sun. The paper suggests that the Baltimore second baseman has a 48-hour flu bug.
February 20, 2008
Brian Roberts doesn't want to stick around Baltimore to be part of a rebuilding process, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I would never call this organization and say, 'I want to be traded. I need to be traded,' " Roberts said. "I signed a contract. I signed a deal. I understand when I make a commitment, that's what I'm here for. But as I said earlier, you want to win. ... For this organization, if it's better to send me to another place and get a couple of pieces for down the road, I understand that, too. The sooner the chance I get to win, the better off." Talks between the Cubs and O's regarding Roberts remain stalled out, but there remains a decent chance that Roberts will be dealt somewhere before the season gets underway.
February 16, 2008
Talks between the Orioles and Cubs regarding Brian Roberts have stalled, and the All-Star is expected to report to Orioles camp next week. "I don't see [a trade] as likely before the reporting date," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail tells the Baltimore Sun. "Anything can happen... but I just don't see it."
February 12, 2008
Orioles president Andy MacPhail told the Baltimore Sun on Monday that the club isn't close to making any other significant moves. The Cubs and Orioles have engaged in lengthy trade talks involving second baseman Brian Roberts , but despite constant media and fan speculation, the two sides haven't agreed on a package. "Really, in the immediate, I don't see much going on in terms of a week out or so. But you don't ever know," MacPhail said. "It's tired but it's true: If something makes sense for us, we will evaluate it. It's not different than other circumstances." RotoTimes.com sources report that the Cubs are more interested in making a move than the O's are. The Baltimore front office has traded away most of their box office attractions and must offer the fans something more than Triple-A talent.
February 10, 2008
When the offseason began, it was expected that Miguel Tejada would be the first Orioles veteran standout to be traded, followed by Erik Bedard and then Brian Roberts. The Baltimore Sun reports that with Tejada and Bedard gone, and Roberts' future hanging in the balance, talks with the Chicago Cubs are in fact ongoing. The report noted that the belief in Baltimore is that the Orioles will keep their All-Star second baseman for now and revisit trade talks before July's trade deadline.
February 9, 2008
Now that the Orioles finally traded Erik Bedard to the Mariners, the Cubs are expected to resume talks with the O's about acquiring Brian Roberts, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. However, there has been no deal struck in principle and nothing appears imminent at this point. Sean Gallagher is expected to be the key part of any deal for Roberts, but considering how long it took for the O's to deal Bedard, it's safe to assume any Roberts trade won't happen for a while.
February 5, 2008
Erik Bedard is already on his way out of Baltimore, and ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that, at some point, the Orioles and Cubs will finish the proposed deal for Brian Roberts. Pitcher Sean Gallagher would be the centerpiece of the package, with Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Ronny Cedeno also being mentioned as possible parts of the trade.
January 9, 2008
Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune thinks that a deal sending Brian Roberts to the Cubs is inevitable. The package that the Cubs will send to Baltimore is believed to include Sean Gallagher, Sean Marshall and Ronny Cedeno, though it's not clear if those are the only three players involved. Roberts hit .290 with 12 homers, 57 RBI, 103 runs scored and 50 steals last year. He would bump Mark DeRosa to a utility role.
