The Cardinals have signed free agent Cesar Izturis to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Izturis hit .258 last season in 110 games split between the Cubs and the Pirates.

The Pirates declined their 2008, $5.45 million option on Cesar Izturis Friday. They instead opted to pay a $300,000 buyout. There won't be many teams looking to give Izturis an everyday job next year, but he could sign on somewhere to serve in a utility role.

Cesar Izturis left Friday's game in the fourth inning with irritation in his right elbow, according to the AP. He was replaced by Matt Kata. The severity of Izturis' injury isn't clear.

The Pirates acquired infielder Cesar Izturis from the Cubs for a player to be named later. Izturis isnt going to do much in Pittsburgh and his fantasy value remains very low. Moving him out of the Windy City will free up more at-bats for Ryan Theriot.

Cesar Izturis is losing his grip on the starting shortstop job in Chicago. Ryan Theriot got the start there on Wednesday, and he figures to see plenty of time there in the future if he continues to hit. Izturis has struggled at the plate so far this year, hitting just .184 in 49 at-bats.
