April 25, 2008
Cesar Izturis participated in infield practice with no limitations on Thursday and took swings in the cage, at balls on a tee, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Izturis said he feels "weakness" in his right hand, but the numbness that followed being hit near the arm with a pitch Tuesday is subsiding. The Cardinals' shortstop plans to take batting practice on Friday and could return to the lineup by the start of next week. Manager Tony La Russa commented that he’d like to avoid using Izturis in the field or as a pinch hitter for a few days.

March 24, 2008
The Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, have been defensively challenged much of the spring. In Sunday's game, however, the team showed promise. They made six stellar fielding plays in the 14-4 win over the Mets, including four by much-maligned shortstop Cesar Izturis . Izturis short-hopped three smashes and made a brilliant play on a high bounder over third baseman Aaron Miles' head to get Luis Castillo in the first inning. Izturis "put on a show," La Russa said. "That was a very special performance." Izturis needed this showing as he will not get innings for his hitting prowess, and at this point in the season, the Cardinals starting pitching needs players who will have their back on the field, not in the batters box. Izturis has some value in deep NL-only formats, but he will make the final cut for his glove, which won't assist fantasy managers.
March 8, 2008
In a game best described as disgusting, Cesar Izturis did little to help the cause for St. Louis and provide hope looking forward. Shelled in a 14-run loss (20-6) to the Dodgers, Izturis committed two of three errors in a seven-run third inning. Izturis ended with four errors in seven games and has just two hits in 20 at-bats this spring. Having joined the Cardinals in the offseason after shortstop David Eckstein signed with the Blue Jays, it was thought the defense would be the shining aspect of Izturis' game. Guess again. Brendan Ryan, who replaced Izturis in the fifth inning Saturday, is also vying for the shortstop job. "I'm not too concerned about (Izturis') defense," manager Tony La Russa said. "I've watched Izturis move. His hands show me he's a defensive player. I think we're going to be an improved defensive club."
