After the Tigers signed pitcher Dontrelle Willis to an extension on Thursday, they are hoping to do the same with Miguel Cabrera. "We hope to sign (Cabrera)," general manager Dave Dombrowski tells The Detroit News. "That doesn't mean it's going to happen, but we hope." Cabrera is eligible for arbitration in 2008 and 2009.

ESPN is reporting the Tigers have reached a preliminary agreement with the Marlins on a monster deal, acquiring Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis in exchange for Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Mike Rabelo and three other prospects. Cabrera, who hit .320 with 34 homers and 119 RBI in 2007, will add a big bat to an already potent Tigers lineup.

The Angels apparently nearly acquired Miguel Cabrera on two different occasions recently, but both times the Marlins came back at the last minute and raised their demands. At least that's the story Angels owner Arte Moreno is telling the Miami Herald. "We felt we had a deal with them twice," Arte Moreno said. "They came back and asked for more. They're doing it to everybody." It's not clear what players were involved in the trade discussions.

The Angels are still discussing with the Marlins a deal involving Miguel Cabrera, but talks have hit a snag. The Angels are apparently willing to part with just about any player who has been mentioned in trade rumors, but if they are going to trade two young pitchers to the Marlins, they are reluctant to include Howie Kendrick and Jeff Mathis in a package for Cabrera, according to the LA Times. And if they have to give up Kendrick and a pitcher or two, they are reluctant to part with one of their top two prospects, Nick Adenhart or Brandon Wood.

Even with the Torii Hunter signing, the Angels still intend to make a heavy push to acquire Miguel Cabrera this offseason, according to the LA Times. Should the Halos be unable to land the slugger, Miguel Tejada will be the club's backup plan.

Miguel Cabrera's waistline has expanded noticeably in recent seasons, but the slugger intends on being in much better shape by spring training next year. "This winter, I'm really going to work on my physical condition in order to be in the best shape possible for spring training," Cabrera said in the Miami Herald. "I've been at it for four weeks now at a gym that specializes in professional athletes, and I'll be there until the spring. I'll keep at it in order to get to spring training in the best shape possible, to have the best season possible for the team I end up on." Obviously Cabrera is aware that he is on the trading block, and the LA Times reports that the Dodgers and Angels are the frontrunners to land him. That said, it's unclear if this is because the two teams have been pursuing Cabrera the hardest, or if it's simply because they have the best crops of young talent. Any deal with the Dodgers would likely include three or four of Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, James Loney, Matt Kemp and James Loney. A deal with the Angels would focus around Howie Kendrick, Brandon Wood and Nick Adenhart.

Miguel Cabrera will be offered up in trade this winter, according to Peter Gammons of ESPN. Cabrera is arbitration eligible and coming off another outstanding year (.320, 34 homers, 119 RBI).
October 30, 2007
With Alex Rodriguez opting out of his contract and unlikely to re-sign, the Yankees are in the market for a third baseman. Could Miguel Cabrera be a possibility? The Miami Herald thinks so. The Yanks would likely have to give up at least two top-flight prospects for Cabrera, who is arbitration eligible and could be too pricey for the Marlins once he becomes a free agent.
October 16, 2007
If the Marlins don't trade Miguel Cabrera this offseason, he will remain at third base for the time being. However, one person in close contact with the team told the Miami Herald that Cabrera will have to lose some weight to stay at the hot corner long term. If Mike Jacobs were traded over the winter, Cabrera's move across the diamond could occur next season.

I want to play, even if it's just to pinch hit." He missed two games last year with a similar injury, but he admits that last season's ailment was worse.

The Marlins are hopeful that Miguel Cabrera will be back in the lineup when they open a weekend series against Tampa Bay, the AP reports. February 11, 2007
Miguel Cabrera and the Marlins are headed to an arbitration hearing on Friday, according to the Sun-Sentinel. They are $700,000 apart in offers, and Marlins management is not happy that he skipped their recent awards dinner, where he was to receive the team's MVP Award for last season's performance. "If there is a legitimate reason why he's not here, we haven't heard it," said president David Samson. "He was the team MVP last year and he wasn't here to accept his award. He calls himself and he's acknowledged as one of the leaders of the team, so [owner] Jeffrey [Loria] and I and the team are very disappointed he wasn't here."
