The Mariners recalled Ramon Santiago from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. He hit .252 with 10 home runs and 18 swipes in 441 at-bats for Tacoma this year.

The Mariners assigned Ramon Santiago to their minor-league camp on Saturday, according to the Seattle Times. The move came as a bit of surprise: Santiago was expected to make the team as the primary backup middle infielder, and his services appear to be needed now more than ever considering Pokey Reese will open the year on the 15-day DL. Instead, the Mariners plan to use Willie Bloomquist and Wilson Valdez at short until Reese returns.
