Orlando Hudson will undergo season-ending surgery on his left thumb on Monday, according to the AP. He injured the thumb while sliding head first into third base Tuesday night. "It's not an injury you can play with," manager Bob Melvin said. "It's the right thing to do. We hoped it would get better but it really needs surgery. It's the type of thing you want to do right away." Melvin said Alberto Callaspo will get most of the action at second once his sore hamstring improves. Until then, Augie Ojeda will play second base.

Orlando Hudson is dealing with a torn ligament in his left thumb. He hopes to miss only a few days. "Nothing to worry about, just maybe a couple of days," he tells the Arizona Republic. Hudson injured the thumb on Tuesday night and played on Wednesday.

Orlando Hudson was batting second for the first time this season Tuesday, as Bob Melvin shook up his struggling lineup, the AP reports. The Diamondbacks entered the game batting .106 (6-for-57) with runners in scoring position the previous eight games. "Offensively we needed a little bit of a change," Melvin said. Eric Byrnes, who had been hitting leadoff, moved into the third slot. Hudson went 2-for-5 with a run scored in the new position.

Orlando Hudson isn't a free agent until after the 2008 season, but he already feels as though he won't be back in Arizona. "I don't think I'll be here for the remainder of my career," he told KTAR-AM (620) radio station Monday. "Even for the next couple of years, I don't think I'll be here." Hudson is having a career year in the desert, and the D'Backs would love to lock him up long-term, but they aren't worried about it right now. "He is a key member of our team," GM Josh Byrnes told the Arizona Republic. "He's not a free agent until 2008. First and foremost, we want to exhaust to keep Orlando a Diamondback, and, again, fortunately we have quite a bit of time to see if we can make that work for us and him."

Orlando Hudson hobbled off the field in the sixth inning Thursday after jamming his left ankle running out a single, the AP reports. It's been a recurring injury for Hudson, and he's listed as day-to-day.

Although Orlando Hudson doesn't really want a day off, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin likely will keep the infielder out of a game in the near future to get some rest, according to the Arizona Republic. "You shouldn't even be asking about that or writing about that 'cause we're not talking about that," the 29-year-old Hudson said. "I'm too young to be sitting out any games. Maybe when I'm 41, I'll start getting a day off." Hudson has played in all 50 games this season and could probably use a day off for the long haul.

Orlando Hudson looks comfortable in the third spot in the Arizona order, the East Valley Tribune reports. He hit .379 the opening week with nine runs, a homer and five RBI. "Your third guy is a guy who a lot of times is your best hitter," manager Bob Melvin said. "I wouldn't argue that he, if not the best, is one of the best. He's able to handle it." Hudson hit second more often than anywhere else last season, but because the No. 2 batter is occasionally called upon to bunt, "I never really fell in love with him at the No. 2 hole," Melvin said. "I don't want to lose his at-bats. It's a real good fit for us there."

Orlando Hudson stayed in the lineup Tuesday, one day after rolling his ankle coming around first base, the Arizona Republic reports. He's off to a productive start as the team's new No. 3 hitter, going 4-for-9 with three runs and three RBI in the first two games at Colorado.

Orlando Hudson twisted his ankle in yesterday's game while rounding first following a first inning single, according to the Arizona Republic. Hudson stayed in the game and picked up two more hits. "I wasn't coming out, not a chance - Opening Day," he said. "My right foot slipped off the bag. I slid a little bit short of second base." Manager Bob Melvin said Hudson's availability for tonight will be determined after he is evaluated today, but Hudson insists that he'll play.

The Diamondbacks agreed to a $3.9 million, one-year contract with Orlando Hudson on Tuesday, avoiding arbitration, according to the AP. Hudson hit .287 with 67 RBI in 157 games last season, his first with Arizona. He won his second Gold Glove in a row, becoming one of only six players to win the award in both leagues.
