The Mets are the frontrunners to sign free-agent right-hander Claudio Vargas, this according to the New York Post. The Mets are expected to sign the right-hander to a minor-league contract, and a deal could be done as early as Thursday. Vargas' agent, Bean Stringfellow, told The Post today that the Mets have offered Vargas a Triple-A deal and are one of four teams in the hunt. Stringfellow confirmed, though, that the Mets are the favorite. Vargas and his agent want to sign with the team he's most likely to have a chance to start with. With injuries to the Mets rotation, Orlando Hernandez and Pedro Martinez, Vargas indeed has a shot at one of the open slots in the starting five.

The Mets have interest in bringing Claudio Vargas in as a replacement for the injured Pedro Martinez, but it appears that there might not be a fit. Bean Stringfellow, the agent for Vargas, indicated that GM Omar Minaya was not prepared to offer the right-hander a starting job in the immediate future. “Omar, to his credit, has been very upfront with me and I appreciate the Mets’ candor,” Stringfellow said to Newsday. “What I’m hearing from that situation, it just doesn’t jibe. I’m trying to get Claudio in the right situation, not a quick situation.” Vargas was released by the Brewers last month. He won't have trouble finding a job somewhere, but with El Duque due back soon, going to the Mets might not be the best move for him.

In a surprising move, the Brewers have released Claudio Vargas, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He was expected to make the staff but his release opens the door for two young pitchers, Manny Parra and Carlos Villanueva, to make the starting rotation, along with Ben Sheets, Jeff Suppan and Dave Bush. Manager Yost commented, "In our evaluations, Vargas was the seventh guy on our staff. We feel, in all fairness to him, we didn't see him pitching in Triple-A. We feel like he's a big-league pitcher."

Claudio Vargas pitched five hitless innings, walking one and striking out two, to help Milwaukee beat the Seattle Mariners in a split-squad game. Vargas made a strong case to begin the season in the Brewers starting rotation with Sunday's performance. Vargas is battling David Bush, Chris Capuano and Jeff Suppan for the final two slots of the rotation. Vargas was 11-6 with one save and a 5.09 ERA in 23 starts and 29 total appearances last season.
