The Mariners signed Willie Bloomquist to a one-year extension through 2008. Bloomquist hit .247 with 16 steals in 251 at-bats last season. He will once again be a utilityman next season.

It appears as if the Mariners have gone back to a lefty-righty platoon in center field, according to the Mariners website. Bloomquist will get the start in centerfield against southpaws, while Ichiro will shift to center against righties to make room for Chris Snelling in right field.

Willie Bloomquist has started three of the last five games in center field, according to the Seattle Times. "It's certainly not a move-Adam Jones-out-of-center-field move," manager Mike Hargrove said of last night's lineup. "Bloomquist needs playing time, as well." With Jones hitting just .204 this season, Bloomquist will likely continue to get plenty of time in center.

While manager Mike Hargrove said that Willie Bloomquist will still play at least twice a week, he has likely lost his starting job against lefties in center field, according to the Mariners website. "Willie is going to play some center ... not necessarily just against left-handed pitching," Hargrove said. "I really want to give days off to [shortstop Yuniesky] Betancourt and [second baseman Jose] Lopez in the second half. I can see Willie playing at least twice a week, maybe more." Bloomquist has appeared at every position this season except for pitcher and catcher.

Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said the left wrist injury Willie Bloomquist sustained Friday was better Saturday, though the utilityman didn't play, according to the Seattle Times. "We're going to try to give him another day," Hargrove said.

Willie Bloomquist suffered cuts to his right hand and wrist, as well as a large bump on his forearm, when he collided with another player Saturday, according to the Seattle Times. "My whole arm went numb, but it's no big deal," he said. He remained in the game.

Willie Bloomquist got the start in center field Tuesday against lefty John Koronka, according to the Seattle Times. Manager Mike Hargrove has stated that there is no platoon in center field, but Bloomquist has started three of the four games against lefty starters this year, while Jeremy Reed has yet to be in the starting lineup against a southpaw. Jeremy Borchard got the other start in center with a lefty starter on the mound.

"I'm told he was reracking weights and jammed his hand and wound up with three stitches in the finger," Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said. He is not expected to hit for several days.
