The Orioles may have to make a decision on outfielder Jay Gibbons sooner than they think, according to the Baltimore Sun. The commissioner's office and the players union are negotiating changes to Major League Baseball's drug policy in the wake of the Mitchell Report, and the result could be the rescinding of Gibbons' 15-day suspension for violating the substance-abuse prevention program. Senator George Mitchell, who released a study in December on steroid use in baseball, recommended granting amnesty to all the players mentioned in the report. Gibbons, who admitted to using human growth hormone, was one of 86 players cited. The Orioles had planned to fill that roster spot and prolong the evaluation of other potential roster candidates. If this change comes to fruition, decisions will need to be made quickly.

Jay Gibbons said Tuesday that his surgically repaired shoulder feels good enough that he could play now, according to the Baltimore Sun. The catch, however, is that Gibbons will miss the first 15 games of the season for violating MLB's drug policy for receiving shipments of human growth hormone. "You know, it's just one of those things where you look in the mirror, and I have no excuses," he said. "I blame myself. It's definitely something that's out of character. I took a shortcut and I'm paying the price with the 15 days." The injury prone outfielder is going to have his work cut out for him to earn game time once he's eligible to play, since the O's added Adam Jones and Luke Scott to the outfield in trades and already are deep at first base and DH.
