Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he will use Jason Bartlett at shortstop and Nick Punto at second base for the foreseeable future, hoping to inject some speed into the struggling lineup, according to the Star-Tribune.

Manager Ron Gardenhire stated that the third base situation is unsettled, but he'll try Nick Punto there while Michael Cuddyer is on the disabled list, according to the AP. "He's not your prototype third baseman, either, but we want him in the lineup," Gardenhire said. "We'll see how Punto does. I'm going to play the best team that can win out there. I'm putting players out that are getting it done."

The Twins activated Nick Punto from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, according to the AP. He has been out with a pulled right hamstring. Punto was hitting .293 in 38 games prior to the injury.

Nick Punto took another step closer to coming off the disabled list Monday as he ran the bases to test his strained right hamstring, according to the Star-Tribune. Punto will report today to Triple-A Rochester, where he is expected to work out before beginning a rehabilitation assignment Wednesday. The Twins hope to have him back on July 5.

Punto was expected to compete for the shortstop job this spring, but a sore back and Jason Bartlett have all but eliminated him. However, with Luis Rivas struggling, Punto could be a starting or platoon option at second.
