The most important thing for me this year is getting this team to the playoffs. Im one piece of the puzzle. For me to worry about contract negotiations and contract talks, thats going to take away from the team. Im going to go out there and play the game. If I play the game the way Im capable of playing, the contract will take care of itself. Well the Braves should be worried about it even if Tex isn't. In each of the past four seasons Teixeira has hit at least 30 HR with 100 RBI, so there is no doubting his value to whichever ballclub he is on. Toss in the fact that he is just 27-years-old, and you have a guy who is looking at a big fat contract sometime soon. |
| January 18, 2008 The Braves signed Mark Teixeira to a one-year, $12.5 million deal Thursday, avoiding arbitration. GM Frank Wren has also had some good negotiations with Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, about a possible long-term extension. "I don't know that it signals that, I just know that we'll continue working at [a contract extension]," Wren told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We've had quite a bit of dialogue." Tex could command as much as $20 million per season when he becomes a free agent after the season, and it seems unlikely the Braves would be willing to reach that numbers, but we'll see. |
