"Health provided," GM Billy Beane said. "It's something Justin has always wanted to do." Duchscherer has made just five big-league starts - the last coming in 2003 - but he was primarily a starter in the minor leagues, so it's reasonable to think he could handle the transition.

He said he needs to stretch out to 150 before throwing off a mound, something he aims to accomplish within a few days, according to the Contra Costa Times. He said he has some bone growth in his arthritic hip that might require surgery at some point. Duchscherer added that if he ends up going that route, he'd want to do it sooner than later in order to be ready for next season. Duchscherer pitched one inning in a rehabilitation stint for Single-A Stockton on Monday, saying he threw the ball well but that his arthritic right hip was still bothering him. "It hurts when I push off the rubber," he said. "Five to 10 pitches in, the same pain started coming back. And today, it's very sore. So we're going to get it checked out more." The doctor Duchscherer is visiting is the same one that performed hip surgery on Cardinals' closer Jason Isringhausen last year.
