MLB.com discusses the Home Run Derby Theory as it applies to Alex Rios' power outage. Since he placed second in the contest in 2007, he's hit just 12 home runs, and only five this season.

The Jays found their offense to be in rare form today, helping Toronto get the 9-4 win over Tampa Bay. Outfielder Alex Rios was the man in charge of the surge, going 3-for-5 at the dish with two doubles (his 25th and 26th of the season) and his fifth homer of the season, totaling three RBIs and two runs scored for the effort.

MLB.com reports that Alex Rios has returned to Puerto Rico to be with his girlfriend who is expected to give birth on Friday. It appears he will not return to the team until after the All-Star break.

Already with a three RBI triple on the night, Alex Rios used his legs and his instinct to get Toronto the victory on Tuesday. He drew a walk in the ninth, stole second (his 22nd of the year), went to third on a throwing error by the catcher and finally scored when Freddie Bynum couldn't handle a hard hit grounder by Scott Rolen.

According to the Jays' team website, fighting RBI and HR help in the current Toronto clubhouse is a difficult task. After losing Vernon Wells to a broken left wrist earlier this month, Alex Rios was asked to shift over from right field and hit in the meat of the order. Rios is a strong-armed defender and swift on his feet as a right fielder, but patrolling center is another story.

The Blue Jays have signed Alex Rios to a six-year, $64 million contract extension that begins with the 2009 season, MLB.com reports. The deal ends a negotiations process than began back in October. Rios, Aaron Hill, and Vernon Wells are now all locked into deals that could keep them in Toronto through 2014.

Contract talks between Alex Rios and the Blue Jays continue as Monday's deadline nears, according to MLB.com. "They're still talking," he said of the negotiations. "I guess we're close ... I think." The two sides are believed to be talking about a six-year contract that would pay him more than $60 million. If they can't agree to terms by Monday, they won't work out a deal until after the season is completed. Rios wants to focus on the season without the contract hanging over his head; he may have been bothered by it this spring, as he hit just .175 with three RBI in 57 at-bats.

Alex Rios is nearing a contract extension believed to be worth $65 million over six years with an option year of $15 million, this according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Considering they were willing to trade Rios for Tim Lincecum this past off-season, it's a bit surprising to see the Jays lock up their all-star outfielder at this price, but given the going rate of pay it's right about where you figure it should be for a guy coming off a .297-24-85-114-17 season.

Alex Rios has bulked up and was seen launching the ball in Sunday's spring batting practice. TheStar.com reports that not only was he impressive on Sunday, but the team likes his professionalism and will sit down during Spring Training with his agent to discuss a long-term deal. "You take a look at Alex and you take a look at his history and he's always been a player who gets better and better," said Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi, who took in Rios's power show yesterday. Rios, in his second year of arbitration eligibility, sought $5.6 million for this season, but settled Feb.5 on a $4.835 million deal. Rios, who posted a .297 average last season with 24 homers, 43 doubles and 85 RBIs, is 27-years old this season and just hitting his baseball prime.
