Carlos Zambrano, who was set to become a free agent after the season, inked a five-year, $91.5 million contract extension with the Cubs on Friday, according to the AP. The deal also includes a full no-trade clause along with a sixth-year player option worth $19.25 million. Zambrano, who is 14-9 with a 3.86 ERA this year, could have brought in a much bigger paycheck had he tested free agency, but it's obvious that he wanted to stay in Chicago.

Lou Piniella dismissed reports that Carlos Zambrano has a sore arm. "I haven't heard anything. I really haven't," Piniella told the AP. "It would be news to me. I think I would know something. I just talked to him inside and he didn't mention anything." In a strange performance on Tuesday night, Zambrano pitched seven innings without a strikeout and lower than normal velocity. "That's what's surprising, because he usually gets his share of (strikeouts)," Piniella said.

Carlos Zambrano has announced that he's ready to sign a five-year extension with the Cubs, according to the Chicago Tribune. "I'm ready to sign," Zambrano said. "My hand is ready to sign that contract. Just bring it to me. I want to stay here and be a Cubbie for a long time." That said, the two parties have not had any recent conversations, so it still may be a while before a deal actually gets done. Zambrano is thought to be looking at a deal that brings him about $18 million per season.

Carlos Zambrano, set to become a free agent after the season, said Monday that if he doesn't reach a contract extension with the Cubs before the season, he will go elsewhere in free agency, according to the Chicago Tribune. "I'm ready to sign, and I would do my job anyway with the Cubs this year," Zambrano said. "Whatever happens, I don't want to know [anything] about a contract during the season.
