Mark Grudzielanek signed a one-year contract extension with the Royals on Wednesday, according to the AP. The deal will keep him with the team next season and also has a player option for the 2008 season. Hours after signing the deal, he hit a three-run homer, finishing the game 3-for-5 with four RBI.

Mark Grudzielanek took part in pre-game drills Sunday for the first time since injuring his back on July 8, according to the KC Star. He's expected to return to the starting lineup on Monday. "I went through some pretty hard therapy over the last five days,” he said, “and I feel much better. It’s still sore a little bit. But overall, it’s better to the point where I think I can get after it. Before, I couldn’t.”

The Royals are hoping that the sore back of Mark Grudzielanek will respond to therapy enough that he won't require a trip to the disabled list, according to the Kansas City Star. “We can’t wait too much longer,” manager Buddy Bell said. “With those guys out, we’ve only got two extra (nonpitchers). And one of those is a catcher. So we’ve really got just one extra guy.”
