Now that the Phillies have added Rod Barajas, Chris Coste is likely to have a limited role next season. Coste hit .328 with seven homers in 198 at-bats last season, but apparently the Phillies don't think he's legit - he hit .177 in 147 Triple-A at-bats last year. He could still make the team as a third catcher and backup first baseman, but he probably won't have much value unless the Phillies send Carlos Ruiz to the minors to start the season.

Chris Coste started at catcher for the fifth time in the last seven games Thursday, according to the Philadelphia Enquirer. Mike Lieberthal still has problems with his hip from time to time, which has allowed Coste to get the extra playing time. He has been taking advantage, hitting .571 (8-for-14) over his last four games, which includes a four-hit effort last night.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said that the Phillies may decided to carry three catchers, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. This means that when Sal Fasano returns from the DL, Chris Coste could still stick around with the Phillies. Coste is hitting .313 with eight RBI in 48 AB this season.
May 21, 2006
The Phillies recalled Chris Coste from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Sunday to replace Alex Gonzalez on the roster, according to the AP. Coste was hitting .177 with two homers and 14 RBI in the minors.
April 2, 2006
The Phillies reassigned Chris Coste to minor league campe. Coste came very close to winning a roster spot as a backup infielder.
April 2, 2006
The acquisition of David Dellucci by the Phillies will probably keep Chris Coste from making their opening day roster, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
March 29, 2006
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that infielder Chris Coste is a candidate for one of the final bench slots on the Phillies. Coste, who hit .292 with 20 homers at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year, would be a backup at third base until David Bell returned.
