Jamie Burke has been re-signed by the Mariners on a minor league deal, according to the Seattle Times.

Manager John McLaren told the Seattle Times Wednesday that he wants to match the pitching and catching batteries that work together when he can. That means Jamie Burke will start tonight with Jarrod Washburn on the hill, and Burke will also catch Erik Bedard for the foreseeable future.

Catcher Jamie Burke put his best foot forward in Seattle’s 7-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays this evening, going 2-for-3 at the plate and hitting his first homer of the season off J.P. Howell in the 8th inning. Burke picked up three RBIs on the evening, his first three of the season, and now owns a batting average of .375 in limited action this season.

Unless the Mariners pull off an unexpected trade, Jamie Burke should break camp as the backup catcher for the Mariners, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He had been competing with Rene Rivera, who was optioned to the minors yesterday.
