Jose Valverde said his face was "a little sore" Saturday but that he was otherwise OK after getting hit in the face by a line drive Friday, according to the AP. The Phillies' Pedro Feliz hit a pitch that glanced off the closer's glove and then the side of his face, but Valverde was able to stay in the game and pick up a save. Valverde said he was ready to pitch today, but manager Cecil Cooper was leaning towards holding him out. "That was pretty amazing stuff he did last night," Cooper said. "He might just need a night to just think about it all."

Valverde was awful on the night allowing three hits, two walks and three runs in one inning, but when Miguel Tejada homered in the bottom of the ninth inning, Valverde picked up a totally unwarranted victory.

Assuming that holds true, this should have no effect on his preparation for the beginning of the regular season.
