Chase Utley started Wednesday's game despite Placido Polanco's terrific day on Monday because Phillies manager Charlie Manuel wanted to get Utley into a game early and overload the lineup with lefties, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. February 18, 2005
Although Phillies manager Charlie Manuel made it seem as if Chase Utley and Placido Polanco would be in a battle for the starting second base job, GM Ed Wade said that's not exactly the case, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Nothing has changed," Wade said. "Chase is going to have every opportunity to be our opening-day second baseman. We have to go through the whole spring, obviously, and see how everything plays out. But we're coming into spring training with the assumption that Chase is going to be the guy."
February 17, 2005
Chase Utley will still have to beat out Placido Polanco for the Phillies' starting second base job after all, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. "It could be either one of those guys," manager Charlie Manuel admitted. "St. Louis, Oakland, New York - I thought some frontline team would be after [Polanco]."
