If Jason Isringhausen's recovery from hip surgery continues at its current pace, GM Walt Jocketty said the Cardinals could move Adam Wainwright to the rotation, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright closed for the team while Izzy was injured last year.

In an interview with Baseball America, Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty said that the Cardinals will keep Adam Wainwright in the bullpen if they are able to sign three starting pitchers to go with Chris Carpenter and Anthony Reyes. If that doesn't happen, Wainwright might go into the rotation.

It looks like the Cardinals will keep Adam Wainwright in the closer role next year, assuming that the team is able to fill its holes in the starting rotation, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. After taking over as closer late in September, Wainwright threw 11 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out 18 in the regular season and playoffs. "I think it's a real plus for us to have out there," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "I hope our pitching staff is strong enough that Wainwright can be our closer. If that's the case we'll have a pretty good pitching staff."

It appears that Adam Wainwright will be the closer for the Cardinals in the playoffs, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright was 2-for-2 in save opportunities while filling in for the injured Jason Isringhausen. The other candidate, Braden Looper, blew his lone save opportunity after Izzy went down.

Adam Wainwright might see some save chances while Jason Isringhausen is sidelined, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Wainright has arguably been the best St. Louis reliever this season, with a 3.03 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 68.1 IP. Braden Looper is another fill-in possibility for the Cardinals, and Tomy LaRussa also could play matchups and use a committee to close. Isringhausen is expected to miss at least a week.

Although the Cardinals have had internal discussions about moving Adam Wainwright into the rotation, it appears that he will remain in the bullpen for now, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It's a legitimate question," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "Let's put it this way, I hate to discuss it too much because it puts the flicker in his mind that it's possible. It has not been discussed to that point. We've talked about it. It wouldn't be right to say we haven't. I don't think it's been discussed to the point that it's going to happen." Wainwright, a starter all throughout his minor league career, has been great out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.62 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out 50 in 55 innings.

Adam Wainwright has won a job in the St. Louis bullpen, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Wainwright will work in long and middle relief.
March 22, 2006
Now that Sidney Ponson has been named as the Cardinals fifth starter, Adam Wainwright will compete for a job in the bullpen, according to the AP. Wainwright holds a 0.84 ERA in 10 2/3 innings so far this spring.
March 10, 2006
Adam Wainwright scattered six hits over 3 2/3 innings on Friday, allowing just one earned run with three strikeouts and no walks. He's a darkhorse candidate for the final spot in the St. Louis rotation.
