Albert Pujols has been nursing a right hamstring injury for several weeks and is under orders to run under control, the AP reports. Manager Tony LaRussa said the injury has also affected Pujols' ability to drive the ball.

The Cardinals hope that Albert Pujols can return to the lineup on Tuesday, according to the official team website. Pujols hurt his elbow on Friday. "He hyperextended it in a swing on Friday," manager Tony La Russa said on Sunday morning. "It was sore yesterday and still sore today. There's a little inflammation. We don't want to push it."

He sustained the injury Friday on a swing, and the joint was tender and swollen on Sunday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Although the Cardinals called him day-to-day, he'll have a precautionary MRI taken on Monday.

The strained oblique of Albert Pujols which caused him to miss most of June appears to be in very good shape. Pujols tested the oblique in the first inning of Friday's game by making a leaping catch and appeared to have no problems. He finshed the game 4-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.

The Cardinals will activate Albert Pujols before tonight's game against the White Sox, according to the team's web site. Pujols, who has been out since June 3 with a strained oblique, was originally supposed to return on Monday, but team apparently decided that he was already ready to return.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said on Wednesday that Albert Pujols should be ready to come off the disabled list and play by Monday when the team opens a three-game series at home against the Indians, according to the AP. "He pushed the workout a couple of degrees tougher and responded real well," La Russa said. "We'll see how he feels tomorrow, if he has soreness or fatigue. ... It was a positive report."

Recovering from a strained oblique muscle, Albert Pujols took grounders at first base and hit some soft-toss pitches on Sunday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He's scheduled to take batting practice Tuesday and could follow that up with a simulated game. Manager Tony La Russa said that once Pujols "is in a simulated game, you'll know he's close" to coming off the disabled list.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Albert Pujols took swings off a tee in a batting cage Saturday, the day after he fielded grounders. He hopes to skip taking soft-toss pitches and face live batting practice on Sunday, as he continues his recovery from a strained oblique. "If I feel as good as I did (Saturday)," Pujols said, "I'd like to hit on the field."

"I'm pretty excited," Pujols said. And he said team medical personnel were "real excited, but I don't want to talk too quick until I get out there in the field and hopefully play for a week and I don't feel it at all." Pujols added: "I still need to hit and I still need to do some things, and we'll see how I feel. I can't wait until I start to get some hacks, and we'll go from there." The Cardinals don't have a new timetable for Pujols' return yet, but it looks like he will be back sooner than the initial projection of four to six weeks. He was injured on June 3.

An MRI exam of a strained muscle on the right side of Albert Pujols was inconclusive on Monday, according to the AP. Pujols said he felt better Monday than the previous day, but didn't know what that meant. "It could be two weeks, it could be three, four, five or six," Pujols said. Team doctors have told manager Tony La Russa that Monday's MRI established only base data and that a future MRI, perhaps in a few weeks, would be more helpful in determining how long Pujols would be sidelined.

Albert Pujols strained his right oblique muscle and left the game after two innings on Saturday, according to the AP. John Rodriguez replaced Pujols and went to left field while Hector Luna moved from left field to first base. Pujols will be reexamined Sunday but is expected to go on the DL. "If you told me right now that [Pujols] would be out for two weeks, that's a lot better than the rest of the year," said manager Tony LaRussa. "I just don't think that after talking to [team physician] Dr. Paletta that two weeks from now Albert will be ready to go."

"There's nothing you can do right now. It's either sit down for 15 days and let it heal or keep going with pain, and that's what I'm doing pretty much, playing with pain."
