Maicer Izturis underwent season-ending surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, the AP reports. He is expected to be ready for spring training in 2009.

The thought that defense may prevail seems true, but Izturis work with the bat could sway opinions.

Izturis is the midst of a battle for the starting SS job with Erick Aybar working as the competition for the position. Aybar went 0-for-1, but coach Mike Scioscia has indicated their defensive prowess could determine the Opening Day starter. Still, the ability to hit and take advantage of speed will weigh heavy in Izturis' favor.

"It's an open competition for the starting position," Reagins said. Even if he came away with the job, Izturis, who batted .289 with six homers and seven steals in 102 games last year, would have little value outside of AL-only play.
