Angels GM Bill Stoneman said that Maicer Izturis will be given a chance to win the starting shortstop job for the start of the 2005 season, according to the L.A. Times. David Eckstein is expected to move to second base until Adam Kennedy returns from a serious knee injury. Izturis was acquired from Washington in the Jose Guillen deal last week.

The Angels acquired infield prospect Maicer Izturis from the Expos in the Jose Guillen deal. Izturis hit .338 with 13 homers and 14 steals in 99 games for Triple-A Edmonton last season. He hit .206 in 106 at-bats with the Expos and has little chance of making an impact in Anaheim next season.

Montreal purchased the contract of Maicer Izturis from Triple-A Edmonton on Friday. He was in the starting lineup at shortstop and batted eighth in place of the injured Alex Gonzalez, and he went 1-for-3 with a walk in his major league debut. Izturis hit .338 with three homers and 36 RBI with Edmonton.
