Because Saturday's game was an early day game following a night game, Joe Mauer was given the day off to rest, according to the AP. The rest also helped him preserve his AL-leading .346 batting average. No catcher has ever won the AL batting title.

Joe Mauer was given a routine day off Saturday, the Twins official site reports. "We're trying to play it all the way out with a lot of guys, but with a catcher, it's a different story," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "This will hopefully give Joe's legs a little break." The Twins should be able to wrap up a playoff spot before the end of the regular season next Sunday, so it will be a surprise if Mauer doesn't receive at least one more day off over the final week.
