An outing gone bad for Gavin Floyd shouldn’t be weighted too heavily, according to MLB.com. Floyd surrendered five hits and four runs through four innings as the White Sox fell 5-6 to Arizona. Floyd suffered through three walks, somewhat balanced by three strike outs, but the box score won’t show the weather: Rain, cold, wind. Floyd has all but secured the fifth spot in Chicago’s starting rotation, but his work throughout spring training has been as solid as ever and the work done in that fourth inning (one walk, two strikeouts, a weak grounder to 2B Juan Uribe) may be a better indicator of things to come.

Gavin Floyd stepped to the mound fresh off a win over the flu and pitched four solid innings, giving up two runs and three hits with a walk and two strike outs in the White Sox's 5-7 loss to the Texas Rangers in the cactus League today, according to the Associated Press. Last year, Floyd posted an ERA of 7.07 in his first four starts but improved dramatically as the season moved along, improving to a 3.41 ERA over his final six starts. He has a ton of upside and may just now be starting to fulfill his potential.

Gavin Floyd impressed manager Ozzie Guillen during his bullpen session Monday. "Outstanding," Guillen said in the Chicago Sun-Times of Floyd's session. "There's one thing about Gavin Floyd: The problem was not the stuff he has. The problem was he didn't have any confidence. But if this kid comes around and has confidence he can pitch on this level, I don't see why he can't be a real good one - not just a third or fourth guy. He has the stuff to be a No. 2 or No. 1 guy." Floyd will compete for a rotation spot this spring. His big league track record is ugly (6.30 ERA in 178 2/3 innings), but he turned 25 just last month and still has a shot to develop into a decent starter.
