Hideki Matsui will return to left field on Tuesday for the first time suffering a broken wrist on May 11, according to Newsday. Matsui has been cleared to play the field for more than a week, but the team didn't want him to play on turf. That said, manager Joe Torre said yesterday he would not hesitate to play Matsui on the Metrodome turf (the Yankees are currently lined up to play the Twins in the ALDS). "We just wanted his first exposure to be on grass," Torre said.

Hideki Matsui has been cleared by doctors to play in the outfield for the first time since returning from his broken wrist, according to the New York Daily News. However, manager Joe Torre said he probably won't put Matsui out there until after their road trip that stretches through next Sunday. Torre doesn't want to risk anything on the artificial turf they'll play on next week in Toronto and Tampa Bay.

Since Double-A Trenton was eliminated from the Eastern League playoffs, Hideki Matsui will rejoin the Yankees late today or tomorrow, according to the New York Daily News. Since Jason Giambi is sidelined, it's possible that Matsui could come off the disabled list right away and start as the designated hitter. He's been out since May with a broken wrist.

GM Brian Cashman told the New York Daily News that Matsui has been cleared by doctors only to hit - and not to play the field - and that the situation might not change before the playoffs. "We see him as the DH because of the projection from the injury," said Cashman. "Him playing the outfield is something that may not happen, and Hideki knows it," Cashman said. "I'm not saying it won't, but no one in the organization is counting on it."

The Yankees plan to have Matsui play the duration of Trenton's current best-of-five series against Portland (Trenton leads the series 1-0). Hideki Matsui could be days away from taking batting practice, according to the AP. Team spokesman Rick Cerrone said that Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser reported the bones in Matsui's broken wrist had fused together perfectly and Matsui could swing a bat as soon as some muscular pain subsides, which could be as soon as this weekend. Matsui broke his wrist on May 11 while diving in an attempt to make a catch.

He is currently hitting off a tee with one hand, throwing, running, and lifting some weights. Following yesterday's surgery to repair the broken left wrist Hideki Matsui sustained Thursday, Yankees GM Brian Cashman confirmed that the slugger will miss at least three months of action, according to the New York Daily News. However, it remains possible Matsui's season could be over. "We may get him back, we may not," said Cashman. On Friday, the Yankees placed him on the 15-day disabled list for now.
