Carlos Silva agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal with Seattle on Wednesday, according to the Seattle Times. "Going into this, I made a list of all the free-agent starters who were available," new Mariners pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said Wednesday night. "And to be honest with you, he was at the top of my list because of his background and the type of pitcher that he is." Silva, who held a 4.19 ERA in 33 starts last season, doesn't have particularly great stuff, but he keeps the ball on the ground and has arguably the best control of any starter in the big leagues.

The Mariners are close to a deal with free agent starter Carlos Silva, a person familiar with the negotiations told the AP Tuesday. Silva was 13-14 with a 4.19 ERA in 33 starts for the Twins in 2007. The Mariners are also believed to be actively pursuing a trade with Baltimore for Erik Bedard.

Carlos Silva will be able to make his next scheduled start on Tuesday. Silva had to leave his last started with a strained groin, according to the AP.

Carlos Silva strained his right groin when he slipped on the mound in the first inning on Wednesday, and he was replaced Kevin Slowey in the third inning, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "He said he wanted to throw seven innings," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We watched him and said, 'We're not going to let you hurt yourself. If we catch it early, you might be able to make your next start.'" It remains to be seen if Silva will be able to make his next start.

Carlos Silva followed his worst performance of the spring with his best Thursday night, tossing five scoreless innings against the Reds. He had allowed nine runs in only 3 1/3 innings against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Carlos Silva has won the final spot in the Twins rotation, beating out youngster Matt Garza for the job. However, after a rough spring, the club will likely keep him on a short leash.

Twins coach Ron Gardenhire made it clear yesterday that Carlos Silva will have to improve in his final spring outing in order to stay in the rotation, according to the Star-Tribune. "All we can do is just keep putting him back out there again," Gardenhire said. "And if it doesn't get better, then we make an adjustment." Silva's ERA stands at 11.02 this spring.

The Twins want Carlos Silva to be a part of their rotation, but he may be on shaky ground after putting up a 7.62 ERA in four outings this spring, according to the Star-Tribune. "We want him to be in our rotation desperately," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We think we need him. Nothing is a lock. He knows that. He has to go out and pitch." Matt Garza, Glen Perkins, Kevin Slowey and Scott Baker are all vying for rotation spots, so the Twins have plenty of options in the unlikely event that Silva doesn't make the rotation.
