Victor Martinez left Tuesday's game in the eighth inning with a bruised knee. It's not immediately clear how this will affect Martinez's availability for Wednesday's doubleheader with Seattle; Kelly Shoppach looks like a sure thing to play at least one of the games.

Victor Martinez has hit just .239 with four homers and 17 RBI since July 1, but Indians manager Eric Wedge isn't too concerned. "I think Victor is OK," Wedge told the Akron Beacon Journal. "He's done such a good job for us all around. He's cooled off a little bit, but I see things that make me believe he's headed in the other direction in a positive way." Wedge also pointed out that the Tribe has three off-days in the next 10 days, which he believes will help re-charge his slumping backstop.

Victor Martinez got a scheduled day of rest on Monday night. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, manager Eric Wedge is resting some of his regulars because of a schedule that includes 17 games in 17 days coming out of the All-Star break.

An MRI on Victor Martinez's left quadriceps revealed a strain, the Indians official site reports. The club will decide before Sunday's action whether or not Martinez will have to go on the 15-day disabled list. "He's certainly going to miss some time," GM Mark Shapiro said. "The good thing is it doesn't appear to be serious." Shapiro said the club is confident that if Martinez does go on the DL, he'll be ready to return at the end of the 15 days.

"I've been doing extra work at first. I signed with the Indians as a shortstop, so I'm always taking ground balls during the season."
