The Indians want to be careful with how quickly they work Martinez back into full-time duty, so manager Eric Wedge plans to pick his spots with how he plays him. Martinez went 1-for-3 with a run scored in his return to the lineup against the Mariners. "He'll be back in there [Sunday], at first base or DH," Wedge said. "He's going to throw again [Sunday], then we'll assess where he's at on Monday."

A sore left hamstring kept Victor Martinez out of the lineup Tuesday for the second time in three games. However, he's not expected to need a stint in the DL. "Not right now," manager Eric Wedge said on MLB.com. "As long as the time off gives him help. It doesn't affect him when he's catching, which is a tremendous bonus for us." Wedge said the hamstring clearly affected Martinez when he faced lefty Eddie Guardado in Monday's game, which is why V-Mart was held out of the lineup against Rangers left-handed starter A.J. Murray on Tuesday. "It looked like [the hamstring] grabbed him from the right side," Wedge said.

Wedge does not believe the effects of the injury will linger long enough to force Martinez to spend time on the DL, or even to be out of the lineup for as long as a full week. Eric Wedge complimented Kelly Shoppach by saying, “Shoppy’s a heck of a player. He’s got a tough job, but prepares himself well. That’s why he was able to come in and contribute like he did. He made a good play at the plate and got a big hit. We’ve got confidence in Shoppy.” The team also mentioned that if Martinez ultimately ends up on the DL, they would bring up either minors leaguers Yamid Haad or Wyatt Toregas to step in as the top backup to Shoppach.

Victor reported to camp with about 10 pounds of extra muscle and then put on a show in BP. "What he has, you either have it or you don't," hitting coach Derek Shelton said. "You can't teach it." V-Mart hit 25 longballs with 114 RBI last season and he owns a career .301 batting average. Russell Martin may go before him in some drafts this year, but few hitters, let along catchers, can match his overall production.
