The left-hander reported no pain, with "everything feeling free and easy." The team would like to have their ace left-hander back before the end of April.

Manager Joe Maddon admitted Sunday that Scott Kazmir "more than likely" will begin the season on the disabled list due to his strained elbow, according to MLB.com. "We really consider it minor," Maddon said. "But to us, it's major in the sense that we don't want it to reoccur at the end of the season." It's pretty major to fantasy folk, too, since he's one of the top strikeout artists. The Rays hope he'll be ready by the middle of next month, but they also thought he'd be ready for opening day.
March 15, 2008
The Rays finally threw in the towel on having Scott Kazmir ready for opening day after having his scheduled spring appearance Sunday pushed back, according to the AP. "It will definitely knock out the opening day assignment,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We just want him to try and build up a little bit more arm strength before we put him back out there. He’s fine. There’s not a thing wrong with him. During the season he probably would have pitched today." Well, actually, there is something wrong with him: a strained left elbow. Barring a setback, Kazmir should be ready early in April, but his condition remains something to keep an eye on. James Shields likely will get the nod for the opener now.

Scott Kazmir threw off the mound today for the first time since straining his elbow two weeks ago, according to the Tampa Tribune. He threw around 37 pitches in a session that lasted about 10 minutes. Joe Maddon commented,“We’re pretty satisfied with the way he’s throwing. It’s real loose and free and no restrictions whatsoever, so he might be OK to get right back out there. We’ll build him up slowly from that point, but he’s looking good.” This is good news for one of the game's best young pitchers.
March 6, 2008
Scott Kazmir still plans on making his scheduled start on opening day, this according to MLB.com. "He threw really well," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He looked normal and he was not holding back. The lefty said that the medical staff agreed with him that opening day is a realistic target. We're not arguing that opening day is realistic, but we'd also be surprised if Kazmir is out there that day. We'll keep you updated on his progress.
February 27, 2008
The Rays got some good news regarding the condition of Scott Kazmir's elbow. The lefty, who felt pain in the elbow while warming up before an intrasquad game Monday, has avoided a serious injury but will have to rest for about two weeks, according to the St. Petersburg Times. That makes it unlikely that Kazmir would be ready by opening day. "It was just a little scary because I never felt it before," Kazmir said. "But after I talked with (head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield) and everything and we did some of the strength tests, I felt confident it would be all right." It sounds like we can expect Kazmir to begin the year on the DL and James Shields to get the ball on opening day. At least it's not serious.
February 26, 2008
Scott Kazmir will undergo an MRI on his left elbow after feeling what TampaBay.com described, "felt like a hyperextension" while warming up for Tuesday's intrasquad game. Kazmir told the paper he was confident it was not a serious injury. "It was just a little scary because I never felt it before,'' Kazmir said. "But after I talked with (head athletic trainer Ron Porterfield) and everything and we did some of the strength tests I felt confident it would be all right. Just got to check it out just to make sure." Kazmir is projected to be one of the top mixed league options and a No. 1 starter in AL-only formats. Anything serious would be a setback for owners that have already drafted and a bigger disappointment for a Tampa club that believes they can compete on their pitching alone.
