"I told Coco (Tuesday) before the game, 'You're not playing tonight, you're not playing tomorrow,' " Francona said. "I said, 'Don't show up in the eighth inning and tell me you want to pinch run.' That's what he does because he’s a good kid, but I think it sets him back." It's unclear when he'll be ready to return to action.

Coco Crisp missed another game Monday because of a virus. "We gave Coco a day off last week because he'd gotten to the point that he was about fried," manager Terry Francona told the Boston Globe. "We hope to run him back out there as soon as we can, especially with a lefty going." The team thinks fatigue may be playing a role in Crisp’s condition, as well. It is unlikely he’ll be placed on the disabled list, but if he is, you can expect to see speedster Jacoby Ellsbury back in the bigs.

Coco Crisp felt some improvement in his sore thumb on Sunday and hopes to avoid a trip to the disabled list. "We're not [placing Crisp on the DL] today, no," said manager Terry Francona. "This is a hard call for us. I don't want to take away a player that can play a week's worth of games, but we're not going to rush him. So we're trying to be patient and we're trying to do what's right." For now, Crisp looks to be day-to-day, so check back for updates on his condition.

"I think he's doing really well," Terry Francona said after Thursday's game, the fifth straight start Crisp has missed. "I think he's leaning toward really wanting to play . . . I think we've gotten to the point where we might not have to (DL) him unless he shows up real sore (today)."

Coco Crisp missed his fourth consecutive start Wednesday due to his tight left oblique, and Terry Francona isn't convinced that he'll have Crisp available at New York this weekend, the Red Sox official site reports. Crisp could be headed to the disabled list if his recovery doesn't progress more quickly. "[He's] not as good as we want him to be," Francona said before Wednesday's game.
