May 1, 2008
Jonny Gomes continues to try and make the best of the platoon he finds himself in with the Rays, according to MLB.com. has he changed his game because of it? "Going 1-for-3 with a walk isn't going to get you in there the next day, while going 2-for-3 or 3-for-4 is going to get you in there the next day. So you just kind of come out of your approach to try and get yourself in the lineup."
April 7, 2008
Jonny Gomes hit his second home run of the season on Monday night for the Rays. Gomes now has two HR and five RBI in just eight AB on the year which begs the question; why does he have only eight AB on the year?
April 5, 2008
Jonny Gomes hit a home run while knocking in four runs in the Rays 6-3 victory over the Yankees. Will the Rays just please give this guy his 500 AB so he can knock 30 dingers while approaching 100 RBI? Gomes is only AL worthy at the moment because of his unsteady playing time, but keep and eye on him in mixed leagues if the team runs him out there every day.
April 4, 2008

April 1, 2008
The Rays seems set to platoon Jonny Gomes and Eric Hinske in right field, according to the Tampa Tribune. Hinske started the opener against righty Jeremy Guthrie and would presumably start most of the time against right-handers, with Gomes getting the starts against lefties. Gomes should get some time against right-handers, as well. This is obviously bad news for those that were hoping to see what Gomes could do with a full season's worth of at-bats.
March 27, 2008
Jonny Gomes had a tough day at the plate against Cleveland on Thursday, as he went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. His average dropped to .241 and hopefully he can end spring training on a high note.
March 25, 2008
Jonny Gomes' hearing is set for April 4, according to MLB.com. The Rays' right fielder received a two-game suspension with a $2,000 fine for his part in a bench-clearing fight against the Yankees on March 12. He appealed the suspension through his agent. He said, "I'm happy to have the hearing. The main thing is I want to be a part of Opening Day." After the Rays play three games in Baltimore, they will travel to New York to play the Yankees beginning April 4. Gomes did not have any emotion about when his services might be missed most.
March 18, 2008
Jonny Gomes has appealed his two-game suspension, according to the team website. The Rays right fielder does not know whether he will be available for opening day duty. "My agent appealed [the suspension]," Gomes said on Tuesday. "Now I'm in limbo [for a decision]. "If I had it my way, I would have no games off. But you get what you deserve. You make your own bed, you have to lie in it." Gomes received a two-game suspension and a $2,000 fine for his part in Wednesday's benches-clearing incident between the Yankees and Rays at Progress Energy Park.
March 18, 2008
The St. Petersburg Times suggests that veteran outfielder Cliff Floyd will fill the primary designated hitter role this year. With Rocco Baldelli injured and out indefinitely, the Rays would like to replace Baldelli with a left-handed hitter who could platoon in right with Jonny Gomes . March 13, 2008
Tampa Bay and New York benches cleared during the second inning of a Grapefruit affair on Wednesday, leading to the ejections of two players and two coaches. Just four days after Yankees manager Joe Girardi complained about Tampa Bay's over-the-top home-plate collision that injured catcher Francisco Cervelli, the powers-to-be warned both teams before the game asking for both clubs best behavior. As is the case in most big league contests, warnings from umpires mean little. The benches cleared after New York's Shelley Duncan slid into Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura with spikes raised. Duncan was thrown out by at least 10 feet and was immediately ejected. Tampa Bay's Jonny Gomes was ejected, too, after racing in from right field and barreling into Duncan as other players poured onto the field. Ah... we love the smell of baseball fights in the morning here at Fanball/Rototimes.
March 3, 2008
Jonny Gomes went 2-3 on Monday with a home run and two runs scored. It was Gomes first home run of the spring but an important one. The right fielder is battling with veteran Cliff Floyd for the rights to the starting role. Unless Gomes has a landslide showing during camp, it's likely he and Floyd will platoon in right, with Floyd receiving more at-bats on the season. The ex-Met will face right-handers while Gomes would get the start against opposing lefty's.
January 17, 2008
Jonny Gomes agreed to a one-year contract with worth $1.27 million with the Rays on Thursday. The deal includes another $25,000 in incentives. Gomes, who hit .244 with 17 homers in 107 games last year, should see most of his playing time at DH in 2008.
