The Devil Rays have asked Jonny Gomes to start doing work at first base, something Gomes is open-minded to do, the St. Petersburg Times reports. Gomes said he has been hitting regularly, recently starting throwing with no pain and expects to be 100 percent by the start of the exhibition season; he had shoulder surgery three months ago.

I tried to battle through it. I've never missed games because of injury. I want to be in there. But it's just catching up to me, and in a team sport, I'm hurting the team."

Jonny Gomes has batted second the last two days after spending the last week primarily in the No. 6 spot. The Devil Rays are obviously trying to come up with a way to jumpstart his bat. In his past 15 games, he's hitting a dismal .159. It's unclear how long the team intends to stick with this lineup.

An MRI on Jonny Gomes revealed that the Tampa DH has a strained ligament in his rotator cuff, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Gomes did not rule out surgery but said it would be in the offseason. He's worried about being typecast as a DH and plans to begin taking grounders at first base, though he wouldn't actually play there until next season.

He said his sore throwing shoulder has improved to the point that he can play there on a somewhat-regular basis.
