The Rockies picked up Taylor Buchholz from the Astros in the Jason Jennings deal. Buchholz was 6-10 with a 5.89 ERA (but a solid 1.25 WHIP) for Houston last season. He'll compete for a spot in the Colorado rotation, with Jason Hirsh - who goes to Colorado in the same deal - being part of the competition.

SI.com reported that the Jon Garland-to-Houston deal fell through because Taylor Buchholz failed a physical, but the Houston Chronicle and Buchholz himself dispute that report. "My shoulder's been great," said Buchholz, who also said that he hasn't taken a physical since spring training.

For the first time since receiving an anti-inflammatory injection Friday for his strained right middle finger, Taylor Buchholz threw on Sunday, according to the Houston Chronicle. "It's not as sore today as it was (Saturday)," said Buchholz. "Hopefully this injection will work its course. I think the earliest I can throw in a game is (Sunday)."

Taylor Buchholz aggravated his right middle finger during Thursday's game, according to the Houston Chronicle. "I think it's a strain," he said. "It's been bothering me for about 2 1/2 to three weeks. I'll see the doctors. They checked it before and said it's probably tendinitis or a strain. These three days off and the All-Star break will be nice for me."

With Roger Clemens returning later this month, Taylor Buchholz will be battling Fernando Nieve for the last spot in the rotation, according to the Houston Chronicle. Buchholz has a 6.06 ERA in 13 games (11 starts) this year. GM Tim Purpura has said that there is a chance the pitcher who loses out on a rotation spot could be sent to Triple-A Round Rock to work as a starter, rather than pitch out of the Astros' bullpen.

Astros manager Phil Garner confirmed that Taylor Buchholz could open the year as the team's fifth starter, according to the Houston Chronicle. "You wouldn't be wrong to assume that," he said. "And you can make that speculation. It might not work that way, but he certainly pitched well. I think of the participants this spring, his last two outings kind of showed he's pretty good." Nothing is set in stone yet, though, as Garner added that he's also still considering Fernando Nieve for the job.
