Ryan Howard struck out for the 195th time this year in the fourth inning Sunday, tying Adam Dunn's 2004 mark of most strikeouts in a season. He'll surely break the record sometime this week. The fact that Howard will break the record this year is particularly sad considering he's played in only 138 games this season.

Ryan Howard struck out three times on Monday and now owns 168 whiffs for the season. He is on pace to finish with 203 strikeouts, which would be a new major league record. Adam Dunn currently holds the single-season mark with 195. "He can improve his strikeouts. He can and he will," manager Charlie Manuel tells the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Ryan Howard sat out against Randy Johnson Wednesday, though Howard said he was fine after suffering a cramp a night earlier, the AP reports. "I'm sure everyone has gotten a cramp some time," he said. Howard wound up pinch-hitting in the ninth inning, lining into a double play.

As expected, the Phillies activated Ryan Howard from the disabled list on Friday, according to the AP. In a two-game rehabilitation assignment at Class A Lakewood, he hit .333 (2-for-6) with a home run, four RBI and two walks. He had been out since May 10 with a left quad strain. He'll be back in the starting lineup for the Phillies tonight.

The Phillies are expected to activate Ryan Howard from the disabled list prior to Friday's game. Howard completed his rehab assignment on Thursday, according to the AP. He's been out with a strained quadriceps. Although the Phillies haven't said whether Howard will be in the lineup Friday, he said he's ready to go. Barring something unexpected, he should be back in action against the Braves Friday.

Ryan Howard is on target to return to the lineup this week. Howard, who is recovering from a quad strain, is scheduled to be the DH for Single-A Lakewood on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning on Friday - assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks, according to the AP. "I felt good. I'm ready to go," Howard said. "That's the plan, to try and be ready to go. Right now, things are looking pretty good. Hopefully they keep going the same way and the leg keeps getting better."

Ryan Howard has started running and could begin a rehab assignment next week, the AP reports. He's coming back from a quad strain. Barring any setbacks, Howard is scheduled to serve a rehab assignment as a designated hitter at Single-A Lakewood on May 23-24; he can first be activated May 25.

Ryan Howard was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday due to his quad strain, the AP reports. He'll be eligible to come off the DL on May 25. Howard also has been bothered by a sprained left knee; an MRI exam on the knee showed no structural damage and another MRI exam on his thigh revealed he had some internal bleeding. Greg Dobbs had a career-best four hits, including a go-ahead two-run triple in the seventh inning, filling in for Howard on Saturday. He'll get some more playing time at first base along with Wes Helms and Chris Coste.

Howard is day-to-day, but was available to pinch hit. Manager Charlie Manuel didn't expect to start Howard on Saturday.

Ryan Howard entered Wednesday's game as a pinch-hitter hit a three-run homer. The Phillies have held him out of the starting lineup all week, mindful of his sore left quad, and the plan is to have him be examined in Philadelphia by team doctors before he returns to the lineup. "My quad hasn't been the best," he admitted to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's my back leg. It's my leg that I push off of that helps generate that power. When you're off, you're rushing things. You're off balance. Right now, I just can't stay on my back side." Howard will be available to pinch-hit.

Ryan Howard admitted yesterday that the strained left thigh he sustained March 1 has affected him ever since, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Right now, my leg and everything like that - I can't get comfortable," Howard said. "It's tough to get it where it feels good." He added that a couple of weeks on the disabled list could help, though there are no plans for such a move right now.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said that Ryan Howard was available to pinch-hit last night and could return to the starting lineup tonight, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Hopefully," Howard said. "That's the goal. The next thing is to see how I run and take ground balls." He was able to test his injured leg by taking batting and fielding practice yesterday.

Ryan Howard appeared to be in discomfort Thursday as he hobbled with an ice bag around his left leg to the dugout to speak with reporters before the game, the Philadephia Daily News reports. He had hit off the tee earlier to test how he felt batting. The leg ailing him is his back leg, which bears the most weight when he is swinging. When asked how he felt, Howard replied: "Stiff. Sore." Manager Charlie Manuel said he expected Howard to be out at least two days.

General manager Pat Gillick said X-rays performed Wednesday on Howard's leg showed that nothing was torn and that the slugger wouldn't need to have an MRI exam. Although it was initially believed that Ryan Howard had strained his left thigh last night, it turns out the injury is around his left knee, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. He underwent X-rays last night and is expected to have an MRI taken of the joint this morning. He almost certainly will miss some action, but more should be known following the MRI.

Howard spent most of his time in the No. 4 and 5 spots in 2006, while not getting any at-bats in the No. 3 hole. I'm trying to find it," Howard said Monday. For what it's worth, Howard hit .341 with 11 homers and 23 RBI in spring training last year.

The Phillies gave Ryan Howard a one-year, $900,000 contract on Friday after the two sides failed to reach a long-term deal, according to the AP. "It's a little frustrating and a little disappointing that we didn't get it done, but that's the business aspect," he said. "Now you use it as a starting point. It's over. Now you go out and play." Howard made just $355,000 last year.
