Jack Hannahan started at third base in Oakland's season opener against Boston, and filled the injured Eric Chavez's shoes nicely as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI, which included a solo home run. He could be a favorable handcuff until you get Chavez back into your lineup.

Jack Hannahan said the A's told him that this spring he'll work out at third base, shortstop, second base, first base and possibly even the outfield, according to the Contra Costa Times. "Anytime you can play a different position, it gives you the opportunity to make a team and to help a team," he said. The club wants to prepare him for a utility role, but with Donnie Murphy the presumptive primary backup infielder and Hannahan having minor league options remaining, he may not be able to earn a roster spot out of spring training.

The A's have acquired Jack Hannahan from the Tigers in exchange for minor league outfielder Jason Perry, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The A's made no announcement, but it's believed Hannahan will join the big-league roster.

The Tigers optioned Jack Hannahan to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday to open a roster spot for pitcher Zach Miner, according to the AP. Hannahan was hitless in nine at bats over three games with the Tigers. "We needed an extra pitcher," manager Jim Leyland said. "It's a temporary move. I don't how temporary."
