B.J. Upton's left shoulder continues to bother him, and in fact he has a torn labrum that will require off-season surgery, according to MLB.com. "At this point, there's nothing I can do about it, especially with Carl [Crawford] and Evan [Longoria] already out," Upton told the Times. "It's a little too late in the year, especially with the position we're in, for me to pull up lame. I just have to suck it up and keep grinding."

Upton said, "The last thing I want to become is a distraction to this team. We've got something way too good going on right now to have to deal with this. We just want to win ballgames and right now I think I'm becoming a distraction. I just can't let it happen, for my sake and for the team's sake so we can move on and get where we need to be."

B.J. Upton has apologized for his latest episode of failing to hustle, according to the Tampa Tribune. His leisurely gait from home to second base resulted in him being thrown out on Monday. It was one of four recent incidents where he failed to hustle. "It can’t happen, especially in the middle of a pennant race. Every run matters, every out matters. I want to apologize for it. It’s just something that can’t happen," Upton said.

B.J. Upton was thrown out at second base Monday on what should have been an easy double had Upton been hustling, according to the AP. Upton hit a ball in the fourth inning that hit the wall on a hop. Apparently thinking it would be a home run, Upton jogged out of the box and towards an uncovered second base. But first baseman Mark Teixeira followed the play up the line and tagged Upton just before he touched second.

Rays manager Joe Maddon explained it, saying, "I can’t make it any more plain, simple, obvious, black and white. There are no gray areas. I can’t have Aki (Iwamura) run like he is and (Carlos) Pena and Cliff (Floyd), who has two bad knees, etc., and permit that. I can’t permit it.”

Maddon said, "As he gains more experience, he becomes better at it. I think he's choosing better spots to go and has a better idea of what he wants to do. He's been thrown out a couple times on calls that were wrong, quite frankly, so it could even be a better percentage than it is."

Upton suffered the injury while swinging at a 2-1 pitch with two outs in the fifth inning. The fourth-year pro fouled off a pitch before doubling over and clutching his left shoulder.

"I don't know if they're going to let me, but I'm looking to [play] tomorrow," Upton said. Upton is being drafted like a possible 30/30 candidate this season, and while he might reach those marks, an awful lot will have to go right for him given a stratospheric BABIP of almost .400 last season coupled with the ninth best HR/F ratio in the game.

B.J. Upton was forced out of action on Thursday when he was hit on the left triceps by a pitch in the first inning by Indians' pitcher Paul Byrd, this according to MLB.com. After getting hit, Upton was met by assistant trainer Paul Harker, who tested Upton's strength in his left arm by having him go through an array of squeezing exercises. A few moments later, Upton left the game and was escorted to the visiting clubhouse by Harker. No further news is available at this time.

The outfielder had a two-run triple in the third after having doubled in the first inning. He later reached base on a walk and stole second before being pulled for backup Justin Ruggiano. B.J. Upton was good in 2007, in fact call it a breakout season if you like, but skipper Joe Maddon believes his best as the Rays center fielder is yet to come. The team website noted Tuesday, "He's just scratching the surface [of how good he can be]," Maddon said. Maddon continue to pile on the accolades in Tuesday's media session talking about Upton's quick feet, his bat speed, the sound the ball makes coming off his stick, and his arm. "Everybody talked about Delmon's [Young] arm," Maddon said. "This guy has a great arm." Upton's fantasy worth jumps this year, and his dual eligibility (2B/OF) makes him all the more valuable.
