The Blue Jays traded backup catcher Kevin Cash to the Devil Rays for righthander Chad Gaudin on Sunday. Cash is a great defensive catcher but has hit just .173 over his first two years in the big leagues.

Gregg Zaun will see most of the work over Kevin Cash behind the plate for now, according to the Toronto Star. "I think that because of the start we have put ourselves into, it has taken away some of the opportunity for (Cash) to develop at a pace that we thought he was going to be able to develop at," said Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca.

Kevin Cash will platoon with Greg Myers at catcher this season, according to the Blue Jays' official web site. Cash, who bats right-handed, couldn't hit anyone at the big league level last season, and actually hit righthanders better than lefties (.279 to .244) at Triple-A Syracuse in 2003.

Now that the Blue Jays have waived Tom Wilson, Kevin Cash seems likely to begin the season as the team\'s primary catcher. Grey Myers will still see playing time, and Cash may have to fend off fellow prospect Guillermo Quiroz, as well.
