Manny Delcarmen worked a perfect inning Wednesday, striking out two batters in the process. It was his first action since Friday night. He had been nursing a sore thumb.

Manny Delcarmen said he woke up "six or seven" days ago with soreness and inflammation at the base of his right thumb, according to the Boston Globe. Although he's been able to play through it thus far, the pain has affected his accuracy. As a result, the Red Sox plan to rest him until the problem subsides. "My four-seamer right now I can't throw it away on the corner, everything keeps running in," Delcarmen said. "When I want to throw my curveball the way I want it, that's when I really feel it. I'd rather say something now than have it get worse and become a big issue later."

Manny Delcarmen was informed by Red Sox manager Terry Francona on Tuesday that the pitcher is a major leaguer and doesn't need to worry about being optioned back to the minors, according to the Boston Herald. Delcarmen is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.90 WHIP in 13.1 innings this season.

The Red Sox recalled Manny Delcarmen from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace the injured Mike Timlin in the bullpen. Delcarmen posted a 2.12 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 17 innings with the PawSox.

The Red Sox optioned Manny Delcarmen to Triple-A Pawtucket Monday, according to the AP. He held a 9.82 ERA in four appearances with the Sox. The club is expected to make a corresponding roster move before Tuesday's game against the Yankees.
