Padres shortstop Khalil Greene could miss the rest of the season after fracturing his hand punching a storage chest, according to Padres.com. Greene also may face disciplinary action. "I need to get more of the facts of what happened, the nature of the injury before we decide what to do moving forward," San Diego general manager Kevin Towers said.

Khalil Greene injured his left hand Wednesday night when he punched a storage chest near the dugout after an at-bat in which he fouled a ball off his shin, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It's not good," Greene said of his left hand, which was discolored and swollen. The shortstop admitted that his outburst had more to do with his season-long slump than the pain he was in after fouling the ball off his shin.

"Ideally, I can stay here for the rest of my career as a baseball player. There's nowhere else I would really rather play than San Diego." The team will engage Greene this off-season and try to sign him to a long-term deal if he can remotely approach his 27 HR, 97 RBI form of last season.

The San Diego Padres evidently have finally reached an agreement with shortstop Khalil Greene on a new contract, according to the Sports Ticker. The Padres agreed to terms with Greene on a two-year contract worth $11 million, according to a report Tuesday on the San Diego Union-Tribune's web site. According to the newspaper, Greene will receive $4.5 million this year and $6.5 million in 2009. The Padres reportedly had reached a tentative agreement to avoid salary arbitration with Greene last week. But the two sides had not reached an agreement on terms of Greene's new contract.
