Zack Greinke has passed Gil Meche as the Royals' top pitcher in the rotation, according to the Kansas City Star. Manager Trey Hillman said, "We’ve got him pitching No. 1 after the All-Star break. I think, throughout the course of the season, he has been the starter who has been the most consistent for us. It made the most sense for me, because it allows our most effective starter to pitch against two different teams in our own division."

Zack Greinke will start the opener of the second half for the Royals, this according to the team website. "We set it up that way because we believe our most effective starting pitcher up to this point, pitching twice in the division in the first six games against Chicago and Detroit, is Greinke," manager Trey Hillman said. "So we want him pitching in our own division and starting it off." The Royals ace will be followed, in order, by Gil Meche, Brian Bannister, Luke Hochevar and Kyle Davies.

The Royals right-hander left the game with a 2-1 lead after seven innings but the Royals pen couldn't hold the lead. Greinke had limited the Blue Jays to four hits the first six innings, but gave up a home run to Lyle Overbay with one out in the seventh.

Pitching coach Bob McClure told the KC Star that "11 pitchers will open camp as candidates for the rotation: Gil Meche, Zack Greinke, Brian Bannister, Brett Tomko, Jorge De La Rosa, Luke Hudson, John Bale, Brian Lawrence, Kyle Davies, Hideo Nomo and Mike Maroth." Three pitchers in the mix are a lock to break camp as starters. Barring injury, Meche, Greinke and Bannister will make up the first three arms in the rotation.
