The Royals recalled former top prospect Zack Greinke from Double-A Wichita. Greinke will work as a reliever for the final two weeks and try to re-establish himself as a major leaguer.
September 17, 2006
Zack Greinke should rejoin the Royals before Tuesday's game, according to the KC Star. He will work as a reliever, rather than start any games. Greinke missed the start of the season to deal with personal issues and spent the remainder of the season in the minors.

The success of Double-A Wichita in the playoffs will determine whether or not Zack Greinke gets called up before the end of the year, according to the AP. "He could get as many as five more starts," general manager Dayton Moore said. "If that happens, we'd probably have to rethink it. You'd be talking about the middle of September. For him to come up here and make one start, I don't know what that does or whether it matters. We'll have to see what happens in Wichita." Greinke is 8-2 with a 4.15 ERA at Wichita since returning from an extended absence to deal with personal psychiatric issues.
August 16, 2006
The Royals have decided to keep Zack Greinke with Double-A Wichita for the remainder of their season, though it looks like there's a good chance he'll be called up in September, according to the KC Star. "He’s pitching terrific," GM Dayton Moore said, "and we’re excited about how he’s doing. But there are no plans to call him up until after their season." Greinke is 7-2 with a 4.36 ERA over 15 Double-A starts since returning from a leave to deal with personal issues. He's 3-0 and allowed just three runs in his last four starts.

Zack Greinke left Sunday's rehab start at Double-A Wichita after six innings with tightness in his shoulder, according to the AP. Greinke said that he was fine and could have gone out there for the seventh.
July 5, 2006
Although Zack Greinke threw a complete game, allowing just two hits, while striking out 12 in his Double-A appearance on Monday, the Royals aren't going to rush his return to the majors, according to the KC Star. "He threw well (Monday night), and that’s a real positive step in the right direction,” manager Buddy Bell said. “We are going to be careful. Hopefully, he will be up here before the year is out. But one particular start, we got to be careful — we don’t want to pay that much attention to it other than we are happy he is making some progress.”
July 4, 2006
The Kansas City Star reports that Zack Greinke threw a two-hitter for Double-A Wichita on Monday night. Greinke struck out 12, walked one and allowed one run.

June 19, 2006
In his fourth rehab appearance, Zack Greinke gave up eight runs on three doubles, a single and four walks in just two-thirds of an inning on Sunday, according to the KC Star. Greinke only has five days left on his 21-day rehab assignment, at which point the Royals will have to decide whether to have him join the major league team or option him to the minors. He left the Royals in February to receive psychological counseling and is working his way back. "It’s a long process," said manager Buddy Bell.

Zack Greinke allowed four hits and three earned runs in six innings on Wednesday in his second rehab start with Double-A Wichita. He struck out five and walked one.
June 3, 2006
Zack Greinke gave up just one run over five innings during his Double-A rehab start yesterday, according to the KC Star. "I saw more angle to his pitches than I’ve ever seen him have,” Royals director of minor league operations Shaun McGinn says. “Even when we first drafted him. Yeah, it’s a real positive outing for him.” He could make around three more rehab starts before joining the Royals, though no formal timetable has been set.
June 2, 2006
Zack Greinke is expected to throw 65 to 75 pitches for the Class AA Wranglers against San Antonio tonight, according to the Kansas City Star. He is currently on the 60-day disabled list but is eligible to be activated at any time. Greinke missed nearly all of spring training after leaving camp Feb. 25 to return home to deal with psychological issues.
May 27, 2006
Zack Greinke could start his minor-league rehab assignment as soon as next weekend if all goes well in a 50-55-pitch outing next week in extended spring training, according to the Kansas City Star. “He threw the ball well,” general manager Allard Baird said. “He’ll probably get one more outing (in extended spring training), and we’ll move him out.” Greinke missed nearly all of spring training while on leave to deal with unspecified psychological issues.
May 24, 2006
Zack Greinke threw 40 pitches yesterday in a simulated-game structure, according to the KC Star. His next step will be tossing 40-45 pitches under actual game conditions in extended spring training. Manager Buddy Bell said Greinke could join the Royals at some point in June.

April 15, 2006
The KC Star reports that Zack Greinke said after eight weeks of psychological counseling, he's prepared to think about returning to the mound. "I don’t know if I’m completely well or not,” he said, “but I’m feeling a lot better. That’s all I really want to say at this point.” He's tentatively expected to resume baseball activities before the end of the month. Although he'll be eligible to return from the 60-day DL May 23, he likely won't play again until somewhere between mid June and early July.
April 2, 2006
The Royals have placed Zack Greinke on the 60-day disabled list, according to the KC Star. Away from the Royals to receive psychological counseling, he has no timetable for a return. "If we did it in any less time than that,” general manager Allard Baird said, “I think we would be forcing him. That’s not what we want to do.”
March 30, 2006
Royals general manager Allard Baird said Wednesday that Zack Greinke is progressing well while receiving psychological counseling near his home in Orlando, according to the Kansas City Star. "He sounds happy, but there is still no official timetable for when he will return." Greinke will be placed on either the disabled list or restricted list for the start of the season.

"We spoke (recently),” general manager Allard Baird said, “and everything seems to be moving forward. We still don’t have a timetable, but he’s not going to go on the 60-day disabled list.” However, he should begin the season on the 15-day DL and could be moved to the 60-day DL at any time. Greinke left the Royals for what the team called "personal matters."

The KC Star reports that Zack Greinke is undergoing counseling from a sports psychologist as part of a treatment program for longstanding emotional issues that prevented him from adapting to the big-league lifestyle. The Royals aren't saying much about when Greinke might return. "I’ve talked to him quite a bit,” manager Buddy Bell said. “He seems to be doing better, but I don’t have any expectations on when he’s coming back. He’s dealing with it as best he can. I hear a little energy in his voice.”
March 1, 2006
Citing several sources, the KC Star reports that Zack Greinke left the Royals over the weekend to deal with ongoing emotional issues. It's not clear what the issues are, but the Royals don't expect him back any time soon. In fact, manager Buddy Bell said he doesn't expect Greinke to be ready for the start of the season. "That could change,” Bell said, “but I don’t think it will.”
February 27, 2006
Zack Greinke left the Royals yesterday to tend to what manager Buddy Bell said were "personal matters." Although details of why he went home were not divulged, sources declined to characterize the situation as a "family matter," which suggests that it directly concerns Greinke and not a family member, according to the KC Star. Bell did say it was not a disciplinary issue, a legal difficulty or a physical injury that would prevent him from pitching. It appears Greinke will be away from the team for an extended period.
February 26, 2006
Zack Greinke left Royals camp Sunday, and it's not clear when he will return, according to the AP. "He's gone home for personal matters," Royals manager Buddy Bell said. "That's all I can say about it. He's just got permission to go home and take care of a few things. I hate to be so vague, but hopefully this will be taken care of sooner, if not later."
