Cole Hamels picked up his first win of the season on Monday. He worked seven innings against the Reds and allowed five hits and two runs (one earned). Hamels walked three and struck out four. The victory this time almost makes up for his disappointing loss when he tossed a gem in his season debut.

Cole Hamels was at times spectacular on Wednesday night as he needed only 103 pitches to make it through eight innings against the Nationals. Hamels did pick up his first loss of the season despite allowing just one run and five hits, while he punched out six National batters. If Hamels can stay healthy and pitch 200-innings for the first time in his life, he could very well threaten for the Cy Young award in the National League.

Cole Hamels returned to Grapefruit League action on Tuesday. He retired the first 14 batters he faced before Evan Longoria jacked a homer in the fifth inning. That was the lone run Hamels allowed, and he struck out seven batters over six innings. Hamels appears to be over his bout with the flu and ready for the regular season to get underway.

The Phillies left-hander has a 12.80 Grapefruit League earned run average, according to Philly.com, but Hamel feels right physically. "If I feel physically right, even if the results aren't what I want, then I feel like I've accomplished something," he said. "My velocity won't be back until the end [of the exhibition schedule]. I kind of got used to this last year with all the home runs (nine in 20 innings) and runs (6.10 ERA) I gave up. But after the success I had last season, I know it's just part of the routine." Fantasy owners who are counting on Hamels repeating his 2007 numbers (15-5, 3.39 ERA with 177 Ks) would like to see more before camp breaks.

Cole Hamels surrendered two home runs in his first start of the spring as the Phillies and Yanks ended Sunday's game in a 7-7 tie. Hamels, gave up long-balls to Jason Giambi in the first inning and Jason Lane in the second. Hamels was around the plate throwing 31 of his 44 pitches for strikes. This performance came a day after Philadelphia chose to renew his contract after the two sides were unable to agree to terms before Sunday's team-imposed deadline.

Hamels will make in the neighborhood of $490,000 to $500,000. He requested $750,000. "I'm not angry," Hamels said on MLB.com. "I just feel a little... I can't think of a good word. I'm a little surprised. It's about respect, and when people don't show that to you, you're caught off guard. I thought it was a low blow." There's a chance that this could affect future negotiations between the southpaw and the team, but we're betting this ends up being a non-story.
